Re: Lightning prevention system.
Addressing the separate issue of "preventing" a lightning discharge directly to your mast SNAKE OIL.
To provide a point/surface for a lightning discharge probably about equal to your mast tip.
Bottom line, Spend your money on good rum you will be getting value for your currency.
If you do not partake, gift to a charity will be 1,000,000 fold improvement.

Re: Lightning prevention system.
Snake oil. Company looks real and they probably believe their product does something, but they have no data or studies to show it actually works. If they did, they wouldn't be selling it to boaties, they'd be making a fortune protecting more expensive electronic assets.

Brilliant product Ratel, no boat should be without, (ketches need two of course).
The product description is so under stated: Designed to protect using countermeasures that control and compensate the electroatmospheric effects produced by climate change, industrial, meteorological or solar electromagnetic pollution, manifestation in the form of electrical storms, electromagnetic pulses, etc. The CMCE Marine protects buoys, vessels and marine platforms, within its coverage area, by correcting the effects of electromagnetic disturbances according to their origin, frequency, voltage and intensity. Compensating, stabilizing the current of the electric charges in its environment and draining them to ground in harmless milliamperes, minimizes the formation of the lightning within in its protection area.
Woo hoo, compensation from the electroatmosphere using countermeasures, how awesome! And it's even available in Gold, Platinum or fantastically in Diamond. I had to have one at the top of the mast and it's been great, gives the crew a good nights sleep. They know that we'll all be free from the worries of pesky lightening sneaking in to the boat, eating all the electrics and wiping all the movies and sound files from our hard drives. Oh we had to have one.
But buying off the shelf there is no test kit and so so we have a special button that we use for this. It is red and lights up when pressed, looks cool so I took a photo and uploaded.
This is one of the best products on the market today. You should have one on your boat, your house, your car, even your golf cart. You never know where lightening may strike, and yes it does sometimes strike twice! Anywhere you have a structure above you then you really need the safety and protection from meteorological and solar electromagnetic pollution. I am so looking forward to the day they'll bring out a personal LPS I will wear it on my hat or even my umbrella, confidently safe from the effects of electromagnetic disturbances.
Come on surely Elcome popped that up on their web site 1 April and forgot to take it down. Or maybe they're just been amazed by the number of idiots that order one. It's probably a daily joke around the office coffee machine.

Right!
Lightning "Mitigation" (bonding) systems work.
Lightning "Prevention" systems do not work.

Re: Lightning prevention system.
Good analogy about lightning protection/ mitigation.
Automobile Air Bags: Does having an air bag reduce the likely hood of a head on collision ? Not likely. Does having an air bag reduce the likely hood of death or injury in a head on collision? Absolutely.
A proper lightning protection/ mitigation system does not reduce the probability of being struck, but it does reduce the risk that the boat or its occupants will be injured.
The definition of "proper lightning/ mitigation system" covers a lot of ground and is a little like assho###. "most everybody has one".

Always entertaining reading advice from people who spell it “lightening”.

Re: Lightning prevention system.
A very enlightening discussion about lightning!
To bad I didn't know about the "prevention system" before last week when we got hit. Over the next few months, I am predicting a lot of aggravation and expense! Took out every piece of instrumentation, a couple of air conditioners, a bunch of newly installed electrical upgrades, alternators, MDI's, freezers, lighting and the list just seems to be growing.
I am going to have to give a lot of thought towards the installation of a well designed mitigation system.

Re: Lightning prevention system.
Preventing, or even significantly reducing the chance of a lightning strike on a boat is not achievable in my view.
However, significantly reducing the chance of severe damage as a result of a lightning strike is a realistic goal.
Cruising boats, especially those sailing in areas which have a high incidence of lightning should incorporate the measures needed to reduce severe damage.
Generally it involves a simple wiring system that conducts the lightning strike to ground (water) in as safe a manner as is practical.

The gold, platinum and diamond all look identical, the same item possibly?

Re: Lightning prevention system.
I don't think it's real. If it was real they would include a claim that it stores all the electricity to fulfill all your power needs for the next three months.
