Lagoon 38

Would be interested to know what your thoughts are on a 2002 Lagoon 38 with 20hp engines. Wondered if this would be under powered as most come out with 30hp engines.
Thanks

Re: Lagoon 38

I have a 400. Slightly bigger. I went with the 39 HP. Very glad I did as driving into some swell can be a challenge.

Maybe take it out and see? If not possible then do a charter and feel it out.

I expect it would be OK for normal use in calm conditions, but come up short in more challenging conditions like powering into stronger winds and seas.

Agreed. Maybe an owner of a 38 could chime in to confirm on how that boat handles with a smaller engine.

We love our boat. It’s very forgiving and we have been a live aboard for approx 5 years now.

Re: Lagoon 380

Choose the 29/30 HP. In calm weather use only one engine. If you like sailing, choose folding props.

Re: Lagoon 38

we had the 30hp engines, but personally I would not spend a second on this topic. It is important for charter folks & weekend sailors rushing back to their base but not necessarily for a cruiser.
Given the choice I'd rather spend the money on folding props and a spi.

Re: Lagoon 38

I did sea trials and a survey on a Tasman 35 catamaran here in Australia that was powered by two Yanmar 2GM 20hp diesel engines. The cat ran fine until we had to turn into the tide and motor home, then we really noticed the lack of horse power.
Cheers

Re: Lagoon 38

I only have chartering experience in larger cats but I'd get the bigger engine.

OTOH, just thinking out of the box: If its a boat you are seriously considering maybe you could use it as is and if its not enough oomph for your use then repower one side with a bigger engine. Sell the one you took out to recoup some cost. I know someone who had a cat with unequal hp and he seemed ok with it.

Good luck
