Re: How do these cats look?

An inboard shaft drive on a cat of that size and weight would be - not a good thing, maybe thats why the designer who has literally hundreds of boats on the water, didn't specify it.

He doesn't specify it because outboard it is a cheaper option , not because it is not good idea

Re: How do these cats look?

Honestly I don't mind in or outboard, I can see the pros in both options. I probably lean towards the outboard camp, but it want decide which boat I buy.

My priorities would be build quality and maintenance record, maintainability, layout, liveability and sailing characteristics. In that order.

A remarkable number of "dinghies" have circumnavigated.

Re: How do these cats look?

Cherod, as I think I have said on this forum before, the three catamaran circumnavigators I know personally all used outboards on their boats. One did change to diesels after finishing. The other two used single Yammie 4 strokes on 32 and 35ft cats. A good mate of mine looked seriously into changing his diesels for outboards on his 40ft cat but it will take a lot of money and time so he won't. The facts show that outboards are a great choice for a person who likes sailing and those with daggerboard cats, and diesels are fine too for certain styles of boat. But there are no hard and fast rules.

For those doubting Peter Snell, he is one of the few designers you will meet actually out cruising. I met him and Anne at Fraser Island two years ago - nice guy.

Re: How do these cats look?

Yep, he's still cruising in his "Sarah" design, which is a nice update on the Easy. Another designer you'll find out there cruising is Bob Oram. And both Peter and Bob prefer outboards.
