The reason members will occasionally see that the moderators have altered an email address is not because there are rules against
posting email addresses (as opposed to URLs for
commercial entities in which a
member has a stake), but because publicly
posting an email address makes it vulnerable to spambots. An email address posted without some attempt to obscure it from spambots can be easily harvested and added to lists to receive endless spam.
The only sure-fire cure, once an email address has gotten onto such a list is to get a new email address.
For that reason, when we see that a
member has innocently posted something like, "Here's my email address -
newbie@wannagosailin.com - I'm available whenever," we will generally alter it, or strongly suggest to the member that he alter it himself, so that a typical spambot can't exploit this lapse of good judgment.
