Damaged Stained catamaran salon floor acid

Hello,

We have a Lagoon 42 where the salon floor had a lot of barnacle buster (acid) splashed on it. 30% to 50 % of the flooring has this issue.

I have tried mineral oil and also a varathane wood stain with little luck.

Has anyone had this issue and had any success repairing it?

I've been told the flooring is formica laminate.

Thank you for ANY help!

Bobbi

Sand for adhesion and put down a new layer of formica? The finish looks burned off, not stained. On the fun side you can explore new patterns/colors.

That’s the opposite of a stain. That’s just gone. Like dissolved.

There is no fixing that. Replacing the floor is the only way.

If you do that project soon, hopefully you can share that with us. I have some floors to do myself. Would be curious to see what the under floor is and how smooth or rough it is. Also curious to see if there is a specific formica laminate for flooring

Paint the whole area with the acid and enjoy the ‘pickled wood’ look. You gat nothing to lose and it may turn out ok

IF it's wood, then sand the entire floor, and refinish it.

If it's vinyl or some kind of composite flooring, then either buy rugs, or have the interior refloored.

Re: Damaged Stained catamaran salon floor acid

Thank you all for your input. I really appreciate it!
Replacing the floor seems to be unanimous. I did have others along with a professional tell me the same thing although I wanted to get "outsider" opinions. He did tell me that it is formica and that he could replace new formica on top of the old. I'll wait and get other opinions and prices. We just bought this boat and are currently in Florida where prices are very high. Once we head down island we will explore other options. I will definitely post an update once we do find someone to replace the flooring at a reasonable price.

Re: Damaged Stained catamaran salon floor acid

I agree with Chotu that once it is oxidized by the acid, there is no fix, although there are paints for old formica. (One way of looking at this is that it is prematurely aged.) The color range of them is not great, but on an old Brit monohull, some friends of ours lightened their boat a lot, visually, by painting walnut (a dark brown wood) veneer white. The paint flowed out well and stuck well, too, but they were very careful about following the manufacturers (of the paint) instruction. Some of those surfaces were vertical.

I'd suggest buying an indoor/outdoor carpet you can stand. Cut it to fit. Overlock (or have it overlocked), and use it . Take it out and wash it with soap and water before storing it for the season, and make sure it is dry before storing. I would try to keep it light weight, but it's job is to hide the laminate and be comfortable on your feet.

If you like the idea of timber there, then look for a light weight timber that you can epoxy (to seal) and varnish. It can look really lovely. Might consider putting some non-skid glass balls on it in stripes against slipping.

According to online published specs (no personal knowledge) the floor is "Asburgo laminated flooring."

I would guess, from the pictures, Asburgo Scuro. Having had the same challenge with a different boat, getting a piece or pieces of that exact flooring outside of Europe could be a significant effort.

Re: Damaged Stained catamaran salon floor acid

While we are on this topic and it does pertain to the OP, what about a cork or something? Very thin layers of it? Are people using that?

I’m using some formica with foam for vanities, etc. however, the stuff is really heavy for my boat. If I put it all over the floors it would added quite a bit of weight.

Also my floors are not perfect. They are not exactly perfectly level in all ways. And as you all know I can’t sand them because epoxy.

So a very lightweight, soft flooring would be good. Thin cork sheets? Something else?

A light, thin, flexible flooring would work great for the OP as well.

According to the Lagoon 42 Technical specification*
Interior: Dark brown laminated floor (Milano)

“Milano”* is a High-Density Fiberboard [HDF] Laminate, which is a type of fiberboard, made from wood fibers, that are compressed under high pressure and heat.
\The result is a dense and sturdy material that is more robust than other types of fiberboard. HDF is an excellent material for laminate wood floors because it is strong, stable, moisture resistant, and durable.

We’ve had that in our catamaran for over 5 years, wears very well.

Cork tiles with a factory polyurethane coating. Amazingly tough and looks great.
