Re: Cats rarely flip ... Irma

200 mile an hour winds are pretty rare. And most of the cats didn't flip.

Re: Cats rarely flip ... Irma

What is the count btw?

Imho it is hard to say if you prefer a boat that has flipped or one that sunk.

An early estimate from St Martin lagoon is 50% monohulls sunk.

Barney, out at sea there is a possible advantage to the flipped but floating vessel over the sunken one. In the lagoon at Paraquita, I don't think it matters much. Flipped or sunken, they are all toast, and I doubt if any had folks aboard to cling to the overturned catamarans.

What a mess...

I agree. It is very sad to see all the horrible clean-up work that has to be done, but I was amazed to see in the midst of photos of destruction there were vessels that were OK, and even the odd house roof! Some lessons for the future rebuild.

Re: Cats rarely flip ... Irma

Saw these photos today.

I am sharing them here not to say cats are bad, but to illustrate the power of the Hurricane Irma.

I read a caption that said the cat 'Catsy" (shown in the top two photos) is a large cat (62 feet Sunreef) and was on the hard prior to the Hurricane hitting this location.

If it can pick up trucks and rip up houses, it can toss boats around, no matter the shape.

And at the grass roots level, it is the very definition of chaotic conditions, totally unpredictable from one spot to the next, so no use trying to extrapolate any logic from what got wrecked and what didn't.

Necker Island's wine cellar would be a pretty good bet though.

I don't know the actual weight of the Sunreef 62 (the dark blue hulled cat "Catsy" shown in the photos above, and all four photos below).

But, looking at the Sunreef website, it shows their 60 foot model has a displacement of 32 tons and dimensions of 60ft by 30ft.

Sunreef 60 LOFT - Sunreef Yachts

My point? Imagine the wind force of this hurricane as it flipped that cat upside down.

Is it true some insurance companies cover you in this area only if the boat is on dry during the hurricane season?

I may be wrong, but it seems on dry boats are very exposed too.

I have read this in another thread.

BTW - great pictures!

Bigger the boat, the more lift area. These boats are really airfoils in the middle and they have what are essentially winglet's on the ends for good lift.

So this begs the question, if the boat starts of being in the water then ends up on land during the hurricane will the insurance company cover it?[emoji16]

Re: Cats rarely flip ... Irma

funny, not. . .

I think many insurance companies will go under, be unable to pay out

And fewer will offer such coverage at all, or maybe just at rates untenable except for the silly-rich

Re: Cats rarely flip ... Irma

Will this end up being the greatest/most costly disaster in sailboating history? Has there ever been another disaster with this must damage to sailboats?

Noah, it's not over, yet, and Jose is on his way, as well as Katia being out there. In a way, there's a terrible irony in being worried about the boats, when the people are in such dire straits....and with more to come, so soon. What's going to happen to those homes without roofs? and whoever was trying to shelter in them.........

Ann, I agree. What do those people in Barbuda do who just lost their home 5 minutes ago? I get it. We are facing a humanitarian disaster of unknown proportions. It's not going to get better anytime soon.

But to be fair to me, this is a forum for sailboaters. So I think my question is fair for this forum.

Jose is forcast to brush just east of the leeward islands and turn north and fizzle out by next thursday or friday ( but well worth keeping an eye on ) katia is forcast to make landfall in southeastern mexico within the next 12 to 18 hours .
NHC Active Tropical Cyclones
Also looked on passageweather using the european modeling
