No this isn't true. A monohull held firmly on the sea bed by several tonnes of lead ballast is even more stable.

At first I thought that article was meant to be a joke, but since there is absolutely no humour in it, I have to take it that it's serious?

Anyway it seems the author was made to look stupid once, by a catamaran, so now he hates them. Presumably he hates everyone with an IQ of 25 or more, for the same reason.

The really worrying aspect of this is that he claims to work in the marine insurance industry. I wouldn't like to think someone like this could work in an area where his prejudices can impact on other people's lives.

And your point is?

Right before she went over, he was on the bow and the autopilot went south. These are the risks you take when you're single handing across the Atlantic in a race boat.

I think the real point of the story is to consider what would have happened if this was a racing monohull.... when the boat rolled, you'd get tossed off the deck into the water. When she righted herself, you'd be dragging at the end of your tether which is fastened to the bow. And if you didn't snap on your tether, or it snapped? It's possible that you'd drown in minutes either way.

The multihull went over and floated. It in fact contributed to saving his life.
