On lightning strikes...

An article by Richard Woods on lightning strikes actually quotes findings by BoatUS that cats are 10 x more likely to be hit than average.

see article here: http://www.ybw.com/pbo/sampler/

(last article in list)

Maybe worth another thread on real experiences and prevention methods.

Here's a little bio and info on the author:

I'd have to believe Sonosailor and agree that this article must have a portion of the tongue on the cheek. If not, it's total rubbish!

No this isn't true. A monohull held firmly on the sea bed by several tonnes of lead ballast is even more stable.

At first I thought that article was meant to be a joke, but since there is absolutely no humour in it, I have to take it that it's serious?

Anyway it seems the author was made to look stupid once, by a catamaran, so now he hates them. Presumably he hates everyone with an IQ of 25 or more, for the same reason.

The really worrying aspect of this is that he claims to work in the marine insurance industry. I wouldn't like to think someone like this could work in an area where his prejudices can impact on other people's lives.

Definitions of Gotterdammerung on the Web:
  • myth about the ultimate destruction of the gods in a battle with evil
    wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

  • Götterdämmerung ("Twilight of the Gods" -- see Notes) is the last of the four operas that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), by Richard Wagner. It received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 17 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of the Ring. The cast included Georg Unger as Siegfried, Eugen Gura as Gunther, Gustav Siehr as Hagen, Amalie Materna as Brünnhilde, and Luise Jaide as Gutrune.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotterdammerung
(I think the "chaotic" part is redundant)

and I thought "gotterdammerung!" is what a German skipper says when he comes back on the dink after Octoberfest and slips on the slime-coated, submerged lower step of his boarding ladder

Quote from Orange right before she went tits up in 35 knots. "he was sailing as safely as possible, with two reefs in the mainsail and the solent, with his ballast full to keep the boat steady."

And your point is?

Right before she went over, he was on the bow and the autopilot went south. These are the risks you take when you're single handing across the Atlantic in a race boat.

I think the real point of the story is to consider what would have happened if this was a racing monohull.... when the boat rolled, you'd get tossed off the deck into the water. When she righted herself, you'd be dragging at the end of your tether which is fastened to the bow. And if you didn't snap on your tether, or it snapped? It's possible that you'd drown in minutes either way.

The multihull went over and floated. It in fact contributed to saving his life.
