Cat Capsizes off Kangaroo Island

The news reports three people have been winched off their upturned cat in the Southern Ocean 100 miles south of Kangaroo Island, Australia. My initial thoughts were, Not another one??.... but when the skipper has a chance to talk to the media it seems that the cat capsized after colliding heavily with a shipping container. Two males and a 15 year old girl were rescued and thankfully everyone is OK. The skipper sounds pretty philosophical about it, just bad luck and no one getting hurt is a good result. Now there is a shipping container and an upturned cat for the mono sailors to avoid. Why won't those things sink? Just kidding, from a jealous mono sailor.

Makes you wonder doesn't it; so much water around there and yet two small objects (container and yacht) find each other and then the outcome is really serious.

Hi Guys,
I'm probably doing the wrong thing here and if so, please forgive me. "What are the odds?" Pretty astronomical, I'd say, although I've heard numerous reports that there are literally 'thousands' of shipping containers floating in the oceans at any one time and I know the thought of hitting one of these "metal icebergs" brings a out cold sweat.

Change of thread tho' and this is what I'm apologising for in advance because I'm not sure where I should put this post but, can anyone tell me anything about "Pro Kennex" catamarans? In particular the 44.5? I've read what little there is on them in threads from a couple of years ago but I'd love to here from someone who currently or has owned one on the past.

Any info on good and bad points would be much appreciated.

Hi Les,

The best way to get some info from CF readers about the Pro Kennex would be to start a new thread in say the multihull section, it is just amazing what collective knowledge is available on CF .

Their appears to be many different ways to flip a cat.

1. Wind induced
2. wave induced.
3. collision induced.

The initial report seems to pose more questions than answers.

So the object was struck side on? From the BOM site Westerlies 10 to 15 knots at the time?.

I'm not sure what Catty's problem is with the report that the boat struck the cargo container off its side. As I recall, the Titanic struck an icerberg off its side. If the boat was running on a course that was not parallel to the container, then the bow could pass before contact was made. This is to say nothing of the effect of leeway.

Of course, based upon past experience, Catty's real problem is with catamarans, period. Catty can choose to question the report of the owners and I gather hypothesize (by reporting the wind conditions) that the capsize was induced by light winds, rather than a collision and the holing of one of the hulls. Whatever. As Tom has said, a most unfortunate end to a beautiful boat.
