Cat 250k
Long time site reader, first time poster.
Looking for for advice on suitable cats for a circumnavigation around the 45ft and 250k mark (cheaper would be better!). Location does not matter.
Aboard will be my wife and two young children (5 & 6 1/2) We will be spending long stretches on the hook.
Any advice appreciated.

Re: Cat 250k
I reckon you need to be a bit more specific about your needs, likes dislikes etc mate. Can defo be done on that kind of a budget looking at around 10 years of age but which way to go would depend on what kind of sailing you plan on doing.

Re: Cat 250k
And here I was thinking it was one of the most specific "what boat" questions I've seen.

Re: Cat 250k
Hi,
We are a family of four (kids are 4 and 10mths but we dont plan on setting sail for another two years) have been looking at this area too. If you haven't already, go to yachtworld.com and you can set your limits. We have been looking at ex-charter cats like Leopards and Voyage. I personally prefer Voyage 440 and my husband prefers Leopards. There are lots of posts in here comparing the two but it seems to always come down to personal preference and the individual boat. Charter companies do 'off loads' once a year, i believe, and flood the market so prices can be dropped. Tuimarine.com have the ex-charter Moorings fleet but they are mostly always listed on yachtworld.com anyway.
Good luck. It's a mine field out there

Hi you might want to consider getting a Wharram Tiki 46 or Pahi 52 professionally built and you could then fit it out to your interior design with the latest nav gear, lots of solar panels, a watermaker and all the rest brand new for way under your budget. They are very seaworthy and many have circumnavigated.

A friend of mine who skippers a charter 440 took the boat from the Caribbean to north east USA last year. Said he'll never do it again as the slamming was so bad he had to wear ear plugs.

Re: Cat 250k
Your budget vs size is very aggressive. Why don't you just visit Catamarans for sale by owner and have a look, as you can't afford to pay broker fees.

Re: Cat 250k
Have a good lookout for a Freydis catamaran designed by Eric Lerouge - they can be found on Yachtworld. Many have circumnavigated, they are fast, seaworthy and have a good bridgedeck clearance.
In general:
Make your choice on galley up or down.
Make your choice on number of cabins and numer of toilets.
Make your choice on engine / engines and transmission type.
Make your choice on daggerboards or fixed keels.
Good hunting!

Re: Cat 250k
Catamarans.com have a 2005 Leopard 47 for $269,000. Sounds promising if $250k is for your base purchase price.
