The listing says it's a 48' stretched to 54'. That would make it an 85 Mark II.

If the extensions are proven by miles and years then I'm not worried. Ya gotta admit 25,000 ibs is great for a 54'.

Yes quite possibly sandcrab ,however the mark II had the streamlined, more modern looking cabin .

Iether way, 30% overweight is never going to give sparkling windward performance the op wanted. The structure is now 25000 miles closer to its fatigue point. Possibly reflected in the give-away price . Better you than me.

Thank you all! You have been great and wonderfully helpful. I understand all your comments about sailing upwind. Believe me, my husband has no desire to sail updwind; however, he has sailed long enough (50 years) to know that inspite of your best planning you sometimes have to take what you get. And, two days into a four day crossing -- you're committed. He simply wants to prepare for all situations.

Again, unless you plan to go the "wrong" way around, I would be more concerned about how the boat sailed downwind and in light winds than maximizing its potential upwind.

No way are you signing off from this thread Darby. I mean, we have only started to drift. The tide is about to go out so pretty soon your question will be set free to drift all the way across the ocean. It's going to have to go with the wind though, as we learned 4 times thats the way to go. No upwind drift is possible.

What is that Crowther"s final fatique point in NM ?? Doesn't have too many hours on engines for age suggests has not been overworked. some of the older Crowther Catana's aren't too different in design.

Would have thought she has the WLL to handle her displacement. Naturally weight not up to best of today's construction but pretty fair for a 1998 build.

Built in NZ Don't like the front line covering all internals.

There's this other 44' Crowther in Maryland for $160,000. Doesn't say if it has boards but most of these cats do. Older listing, maybe it's still available and they are really ready to sell.

Could try something called Beneteau Blue... not mentioned here much as its not in the mega stateroom class... but they do sail and can be lived aboard if you've ever owned boats under 40-50ft...

Palarran .... I am sailing this ship to it's final destination! As long as you all are here to naviagte the passage with me However, I might get some crap about what I'm getting ready to say. I think I am just in love with the Catanas. Maybe it's just a woman thing and yes they are pricey, but they are just made well and have a nice flow for living aboard.

Sailing and life aboard? I know nothing about other than what others tell me. Budget? Wheew, but I like the older ones very much and Sand Crab says the older ones are built well. Apparently, their (Catana) assymetric hulls, high bridgebeck, daggerboards, and trampoline make them ideal for blue water. So, I can either A. Keep savng. B. Win the Florida Powerball C. Take $5 from each poster who drifts of hijacks a thread, in which case I will be buying my Catana in VERY short order.

I vote C and the question them, what to name her.

There is a Catana 381 in Virginia for $169,000. I don't know if I would be able to deal with the helm setup on it.
You can usually find a Catana 39 in your price range but they have tiller steering which for me is a positive bit for most people not. They also have pretty skinny double bunks and small galleys.
