Where Is the Best Place in the World to Have a Wooden Boat Built - Cheap but Good ?

If I were to sell my boat and had a design in hand where would be the most affordable country in which to have it built in wood. Obviously good workmanship would be a must. Any Ideas.

Those boats in Sulawesi are beauties, that's where I got the boating bug, one look and I said to myself " I could be happy living on a boat like that cruising Indonesia." We are now in Guatemala, and yes, happy.

Problem is, boats like that are a bitch to keep up, especially in the tropics. Given the number of steel fishing boats available for a song on both coasts of the USA, you're better off going with steel.

By the time they finish up the interior and mechanics, your costs will be up around750k. Rebuilt my shrimp boat in Louisiana for a third of that.

But if you have a design in mind and have to have it in wood, go to Sulawesi.
I would go there for my next haircut.

Depends on the size...

Having built a 6.5m sailing boat and a few dinghies I'd suggest that the best place to build a dinghy is your garage and the best place to build a small yacht is your backyard.

For a big cruising yacht (over 28') I'd favour the Philippines. Cheap labour and the locals are friendly.

You are responding to a thread last posted to in 2011, so kinda moot IMO.

But for anyone with similar interests, Hobart is kinda downtown. The majority of wooden boat building in SE Tasmania is in Franklin and Cygnet these days. Plenty of talent, great enthusiasm for wooden boats, but not realistically "cheap". Attendance at the next Wooden Boat Festival (Feb 2021) would put you in contact with lots of resources and be a great experience to boot... ighly recommended!

Known as the Project Management Triangle, Triple Constraint, or Iron Triangle:
"Fast, good, or cheap.
Pick two."
