What Sailboat for Atlantic crossing with family?

On a restricted budget buy a production boat as new as you can afford , ignore the old solid boat BS , typically armchair sailors. If you go to the cruising crossroad centres of the world you’ll see plenty of beneteaus Bavaria etc. Old moodys , any old boat will have clapped out gear clapped out engine etc etc. It will cost you a fortune to repair and upgrade especially in remote places. Not to mention spending your life waiting for parts.

Go as new as you can afford , new gear in a sale is way cheaper then buying it after.

With a two year old , you’ll be almost single handing so set the boat up. If you’re set on CC consider the beneteau or Bavaria ocean CCs

Given the budget , you have to laugh at people suggesting Amels etc.

Is the 100 K a total available funds or just to purchase , you’ll need about 20k for the fitout.

Personally I’d dump the CC requirements , it limits the boat choice , and under 45 feet compromises everything on the boat. It’s also a terrible place to sleep while underway.

Just saw a hans Christian 38t for 100k on a Facebook site. Don't know anything about it. We had an hc34 although we didn't cross an ocean we put many miles on her.

If you can find one, a Joshua 40 steel ketch would be perfect. The French company META built 70 of them, and most are still sailing blue water, but they don’t come up for sale very often. From the comments that are sure to follow, you will think that no steel boat can survive more than a few months with rust and electrolysis to contend with, but somehow my Joshua has crossed the Atlantic 12 times in the last 45 years, and will do so again in the spring. Nothing gives you the security of a quarter inch of steel, which is what you want with kids, obviously. They are also easy to single-hand, which is what you’ll be doing most of the time because your wife will have plenty to do with the kids. She heaves-to easily in a storm, and averages 140 miles a day at sea. Mine has 4 good sea berths - two pilot berths, and two settee berths in the main cabin. It also has an aft cabin for privacy at anchor. More than enough space for a friendly family at sea. You don’t want one of those big beamy boats with wide open spaces. A good way for someone to get badly hurt. And it should be in your price range. That’s about what I have in mine after a thorough re-fit to paint, replace rigging and sails, and equip for blue water cruising. Good luck.

Steel is great , until you realise the upkeep is endless , and fixing anything requires particular skills including removing interiors.

Grp is way way easier to maintain even an old boat with lots of initial elbow grease can be brought up like new. Holes can be made , mods can be glassed in and any yacht yard has loads of people familiar with the materiel. It’s ideal DIY material. Steel is not.

Disclosure : owned a steel boat for a while.

I´m selling my boat, it is at Marina de Portimão,Algarve,Portugal. You can see it at "the yachtmarket.com", searching for BONAVENTURA 45/50.Very good condition, can be single handed sailed.

Are you trying to troll the members who are offering advice to someone that asked for it or disparage the OP or both or ????

I don’t see the point of your post.

Buy the books about family cruising by Liza Copeland.

Sure, the boat matters but not as much as the crew and how they live aboard. Liza and her husband Andy do a deep dive into all the important stuff.
