What is it Called When a Boat Leans Side to Side?

What is the term used for a boat leaning side to side and how can i calculate this with the ships dimensions, i know the dimensions i just am wondering what the term is and how to calculate it with wave height and the boats dimensions, please answer.

If you're talking about a sail boat, while underway, its called heeling. Its from the wind acting against the sails. For any boat, with no other external factors involved, say the boat is on a mooring and she starts to "tilt" its called a list and is a very bad thing.

Rolling. Forward and aft is pitching. Not really a calculation thing I think. Round bilges with wineglass crossection may roll more than a more beamy boat with a sharper turn at the beam and leading into the keel. maybe google boat rolling and see what pops up as examples....

here is a comparison, the flatter bottom (B, C) will roll less, but have a quicker, more snappy action. Of course it's not that simple...

Boats yaw, roll, and pitch. Just like a plane (airship). A naval architect has standard calculations to estimate as does the Coast Guard.

In fact, software exists to compute the rolling motion of a ship (as well as pitching, yawing, heaving swaying and surging), taking into account the hull shape (including appendages), the mass distribution, the wave spectrum of energy, the control algorithm for the rudders/stabilizing fins... Just google "seakeeping software".

How about a hint so the rest of us don't have to read all his other posts?

Maybe we could discuss all of the (e)motions a bucket is subjected to at this point ...

Finally, someone with some sense!

Sometimes my buckets are amused by Chucklet's comments, other times they're scared!

It's just awful the amount of abuse they have to go through when trolls attack!
