Westerly sailboats...

Open forum, please your advice which Westerly is best for circumnavigation and live onboard, low/medium budget. Thanks.

Re: Westerly sailboats...

Westerly boats are in general well built, if well kept(!) any of them can be a reasonable circumnavigating vessel above 30'. Condition is crucial, a lot happens to a boat in 30+ years.

But first things first:
1. how big is the crew?
2. what is your "low/medium budget"?
3. what do you mean by circumnavigation? ARC+Panama canal+coconut milk run can be done (has been done?) in a kayak, rounding the Horn is somewhat more demanding...

Centaur 26 for me, but my max beam requirement is 8'6"

Dylan on Keep Turning Left purchased a budget Centaur, last year?

I think the word "circumnavigation" will more define his real budget, than the actual purchase price...

Planning to sail alone, single-handed. Looking for a living/cruising sailboat with a budget to buy and equip for £50K.

Re: Westerly sailboats...

That Sealord would be ok, but seems very high on price. You should be able to get an Oceanlord within that price, which is the 41' successor. Either will do the job very nicely, but a 30+ year old Sealord is going to need work, like any boat of that age.

If you wanted a smaller boat, the 35' Storm was a nice quick boat, but doesn't have the excellent pilot cabin of the first two.

Longbow could be refurbed and outfitted for your budget.

Re: Westerly sailboats...

These guys in Suffolk have a nice Oceanranger 38 (replacement for the Sealord) asking exactly your budget.

https://au.yachtworld.com/boats/1993...ller%20listing

They also have a nice Storm 35 at half the price leaving you plenty of spare cash for fixing up.

Either of these will get you round. Which would not be the case for the Centaur unless you’re a complete masochist.

Sadly , that Oceanranger hasn't had her 'Westerly Droop' sorted..

For a singlehander?
The Oceanlord is a bit on the big side as - being over 12 metres - she will cost you in marina dues over time...
The Sealord.... under the 12 metre line... they are a bit long in the tooth but if in good order a brilliant boat which can be singlehanded. Indentical in almost all respects to the Oceanlord.... only difference is the sugar scoop stern.
A bit smaller... still a top boat... is the Corsair... only real difference to the Sealord is the size of the aft cabin.

https://wiki.westerly-owners.co.uk/i...finitive_Guide

Older ... pre Dubois ... if you can find one in good order consider a Conway or a Discus or any of that group.

There are a few ( 3) known vices of the Corsair/Sealord/Oceanlord family... all can be easily sorted.
I don't have any familiarity with the older pre Dubois boats but have seen plenty out and about....

I second El Pinguino's opinion about the Westerly Corsair. Its a boat worth investigating.
