Re: Vendee 2020

I think he got this habit in the past when he used this command to activate a video camera. I do not know if this is still the case.

EDIT:
I did a search on the french websites for this and found:

"les trois commandes successives qu'il doit faire sur le bouton de sa Dji Osmo pour faire pivoter la camera sur 360 °."

In english: "the three inputs he has to do in series on the button of his DJI Osmo to get the camera do a 360° panning"

He has since made it his trademark phrase.

I think he is using a Fimi palm or similar to film.

He always says "clack clack clack" when engaging the automatic 180 degree turn to warn the viewer of the rapid turn. Nice touch.

They were both happy and I am sure they’ll celebrate together on land later.

Re: Vendee 2020

No doubt...I understand that there is a " tourist" boat of sorts that heads out to Kerguelen Islands, four times a year, from Reunion Island....it's a supply ship that takes passengers...that will probably be Kevin's ride back to Reunion....Jean may still beat him back to Les Sables. Reunion has an airport. All things considered, I'm sure he will be glad to step back on French soil after this ordeal.

Re: Vendee 2020

Anyone has some thoughts on my recent thread concerning Kevin's rescue?

According to VG reports, Nivôse is taking Kevin to Reunion. They may need to go there anyway to resupply themselves. (Not much available on Kerguelen Islands.) It might be possible to vfy this on MarineTraffic.

He was already transported to a French Frigate Sunday morning. All done. 5 boats already retired, confused seas this year did most of them in, and lots of debris hitting the boats. I am following also the Joules Vernes guys trying to break the record this year. SOBEDO is ahead of the record so far by 400 nmiles

Re: Vendee 2020

Interestingly, there is a German company that makes model r/c sailboats. These model boats now sport carbon fiber hulls, twin rudders, exotic sail material, canting keels and dagger boards (in lieu of foils)...plus furling sails.
They look very much like a Vendee boat.
Like a Vendee boat, they don't come cheap.

Model r/c trimarans are now also available with foils....

Racing r/c sailboats is quite a big thing, never realized that.

Re: Vendee 2020

interesting...they've got 3 non-foilers in the lead pack....was watching the interview last night with Pieter Heerema on Sea Wolves...who opined three important things....
1. the structural lightness of these boats...they can figure out that "x" kgs of weight will slow the boat down by " x" knots.....but it comes at a cost....it can break.....ala Alex Thompson....you might gain 12 hours in speed...only to waste 24 hours fixing the damage...or longer...
2. same principle behind the foils...it adds weight and structural complexity...gives another thing to catch on whales, floating debris, etc...and is useful only under certain conditions.....
3. given all the above....Heerema opined that a non-foiling boat would be his choice...while the likelihood that a foiled boat will win the race...it has to stay intact to do so....

all things considered....Jean Le Cam....is in there with a chance...
