used tartan 41 ft. versus new jeaneau 42 ft.

I'm looking for a liveaboard and am leaning toward the tartan (41 foot) but looking at the jeaneau 42. Any low-down out there on either choice? I had been looking at cats but have decided to wait a few years, primarily for cost reasons. Thanks much!!

The original Tartan 41 (1972 - 1976) was a flush deck IOR racing design, not ideally suited top cruising.
The T41 is not to be confused with the T40/412 series from the 80's, nor the newer T4100 (both cruiser-friendly).
In which model are you interested?

Personally, I’m not fond of the “fat hump-backed" Euro-styling characteristic of the Jeanneaus, including the 42.

I know of one 10 year old 4100 that had a transverse crack (ie the boat was breaking in half) that was repaired by the factory.

Lawsuits in progress vs. Tartan and C&C on a couple of the "00" vintage boats AND the company seems to be in some trouble with vendors, banks and their former lawyers.
Older Tartans have no such issues...but if factory support is a concern you might proceed with caution. The Gozzards are wonderful boats if a bit over-priced. Jeanneau provides good solid value but is not quite as upscale in fit and finish or construction scantlings as the other boats.

I've been favourably impressed by the new lines from Tartan - in the showroom and at the dock, I haven't had the chance to sail any of them yet. (Planned for 2009 summer charter.)

One thing I'm most interested in is the carbon-fibre rigs. The numbers seem to suggest they've trimmed a lot of weight aloft. But with those flat aft lines I have a feeling the motion on these boats may be on the side of sharp and quick. "Performance cruiser"?

Anyone sailed one?

Just my opinion, but the Tartan 4100 doesn't seem to have a good sea-berth. I'm a fan of the single aft pilot berth (endangered species apparently).

But then you asked about live-aboard, not cruising necessarily.

If all three of those are in your price range, I'd take the Gozzard without a doubt, assuming it's in comparable condition. I've sailed on two Bayfields (gozzard designed) and they are well built, well designed, etc..
