US quality boats

If you were looking at Oyster, HR, Moody, Amel etc. What would you be looking at in the US as an alternative. All of these are great boats but the best selection in the used market is in Europe.

If you were in the US what would you consider a viable option? Doesn't have to be made here just pretty available here.

Pacific Seacraft

Pacific Seacraft is the award winning manufacturer of ocean going sailing yachts. The Pacific Seacraft manufacturing facility is located in Washington North Carolina. The company was featured in the book The Worlds Best Sailboats by Ferenc Mate. Paci

Prejudicially speaking of course ....

One of the sturdiest and finest is Gozzard. Made in USA in the state of Ontario. Ontario is also my favorite state north of the Mason Dixie. The factory is a short drive from either Buffalo or Michigan.

You didn't mention whether new or used.
For me, no question about it, a Hinckley, (if I win the lottery).
Morris comes to mind.

Hinckley. And if you are willing to step down a bit, Tartan.

Re: US quality boats

Nothing in Wally’s class but few are.
The Hinckley Bermuda one of the best built boats made. Certainly at par with XYacht and Swan who seem alone in their own class.
The Navy 40 ? Amazing boat.

US is better known for amazing Power Yachts. Palmerston Johnston, Broward, Hatteras and a few others like the 3rd owner of Donzi was into off shore fishing so Donzi produced two massive 65 and 85’ offshore hulls way above the masses in all respects. Ocean Yachts Ocean Alexander even Chris Craft. These boats went head to head with Europe’s best and the Asian products delaminated in a decade so who cares.

Tartan Sailboats are top quality in every regard. Way too much wood for a contemporary modern boat more locked in traditions with shrinking markets.

Catalina is I believe in the perfect success zone but would still be better off with a stronger power boat partner to go long term. I see the perfect 80/20 rule. Catalina targets what at least 80% of us want. Good boat good service reasonable price.

I’m sure if there was a bigger market for these fabulous boats you listed whom sell a handful of hulls a year and American company would step up to the plate.

Jeanneau and Beneteau never built their Yacht line in US and of the 70 Jeanneau 64 hulls built less than 10 we destined to the US and that’s a “production boat” built as well as the list of who’s who

In my memory the most exciting sailboat to come out of the US in decades is the 38’ Mule From the New York Yacht club It’s big brother patriot not so well built but the mule is darn out awesome.

I love you guys.

Most of us along the lake see ourselves as lake people, and associate freely, oft forgetting to recognize the border.

Nobody in the US builds modern orientated boats like the ones mentioned in your post. Boats like Pacific Seacraft are niche appeal products , aimed at a limited very conservative older demographic. Oyster , lately HR and recently Amel now all produce modern designs only

Alden yachts stopped production in 2009 but these are among if not the best boats made in the US.

Re: US quality boats

Very few buyers want the “ acres of teak “ boats Alden , PC , etc built these days now do they want the conservative designs.

Look at modern HR, oyster , etc to see the trends in these high end brand markets.

We were discussing quality, not flashy decorations.

Re: US quality boats

Agree Tetepar. Ontario and New York boaters are one Gang. I’d say as a Canuck I’m jelly the US makes so many Amazing boats and we are doing zip. Yup we made some good middle of the road sailboats , good n bad power boats but all quiet in the land of snow.
The US sailors typically have better water balloon motors which sucks also

The OP mentioned Oyster HR , Amel etc , all these companies have embraced modern design trends , including modern interior design , the market for boats full of teak , is now a tiny throwback marketplace largely in the US only , though most of those companies have failed.

The OP has of course forgotten Discovery ( now gone ) Malo, contest , Sunbeam , Regina , Garcia , to name even more “ quality “ brands. ( and that’s to ignore the very small European semi custom builders arguably producing the finest quality money can buy )

The US is not and has never been a large sailing boat marketplace , it’s largely a powerboat marketplace and even that sector is mainly runabouts ( which the US dominates )

Hence there is no comparable industry to rival , the yacht brands mentioned

“ decoration “ matters as a modern Oyster buyer is going to run a mile from a Pacific Seacraft , even though in its basic design it’s a fine boat. .
