To Ketch or Not to Ketch

There are really no places in SD harbor that you can anchor indefinitely. Mooring bouys usually have a waiting list YEARS long. Zee' could give you info on prices I'm sure. There is a mooring gestapo office at the foot of Laurel St, I believe. There used to be anchorage available off the Coast Guard station across from the airport but I heard that it is limited to short time stays. Things may have cleared out now the Ha-Ha cruisers have left. There is short term dockside tieups available behind the Customs and Immigration dock on the north side of Shelter Island where you check in. I think it is restricted to 2 weeks. Is that stll correct, Zee'? Not sure what the availablity of anchorage is south of Coronado Bridge now. They cleaned out a lot of the live aboards several years ago. You are correct in surmising that San Diego has mucho regulation. Don't be put off a solid older wooden boat if it has been well cared for. I had a 1974 woody in great shape and sold her for much more than I paid after living aboard for 5 years. Just get a good survey!

Clearly a blue water home, Bob! Beautiful lines, great rig and obviously set up for off shore. Enclosed steering station aft is a feature I've not seen before... thx... Capt Phil

Actually it's a pilot house over the aft cabin that extends aft to form an overhang for shelter in the cockpit.

Bob, here is a designer question for you. How hard would it be to convert the following traditional plan of yours or similar to a ketch or yawl?

This is a bit more like the direction I would like to go with my next boat probably just over the 30’ mark and similar a Collin Archer.

It could be done but the mizzen is going to clutter up that small cockpit.
It can always be done.

Shane.... you'd be better off setting an Archer up with the Yawl set-up.... that way you wont lose cockpit space... just need to figure out how not to obstruct the tiller... not that hard...

Thanks guys - sounds like if I ever get there the yawl is the better option.

In passing, I don’t find the mizzen mast in my H 28 clutters the cockpit too much. It is actually a handy place for the main compass and a winch pocket where I usually put my handheld GPS secured by a lanyard and shark clip. In the not too distant future I am looking at putting a small LCD depth sounder panel a bit higher and if there is any room left an Icom VHF Command mic.

The one downfall of the mast in the cockpit is that you cannot use a longer tiller and/or extension so that you can steer from the cabin in a rain squall etc..,,, Next boat I am keen on retaining the tiller.

Shane, if you really want to steer from cover like that, a pair of small lines led from either side of the tiller and through appropriate blocks around the mizzen and into the companionway have long been used for this purpose. Pretty simple if the steering loads are not too big.
