Stale Diesel

Hi Im looking at buying a 52 ft steel motorsailer in South Australia. Awaiting survey results now. The boat has been on the hard for six years. The diesel motor was winterised by the local volvo dealer and the tank was filled (1800 ltrs) and additives were put in with fuel. However six years is a long long time. Anyone have any experience with something like this? thanks neil

depending on the additives i would think its fine. but make sure to keep a spare filter on board and change it a few times. also you could setup a pump and filter to cycle the fuel thru a filter a few times to be safe

you may or may not have issues with the fuel but you will certainly have issues with the fuel tank no matter what the additives. Prior to launch you will need to factor in the cost of removing the fuel, might as well clean it at the same time, and having the tanks cleaned or you are just asking for problems down the road.
