Sailing from Germany to Croatia

I am considering buying a new Hanse 385 and sailing it from Greifswald (German-Polish border) to Croatia in May next year. I am a relative novice in sailing and I would very much like to hear any suggestions or tips from people that have covered any part of this journey. I do have an option to have the boat transported to Adriatic but I would like to use this opportunity and sail around this part of the world.

You've 2 options by water... come down the rivers and canals to S. France and the Med... which just leaves the 1 leg to get around..
Or... down through the N. Sea, English Channel into the Bay of Biscay and across to Spain/Portugal/Spain and then to Gibraltar...
Gateway to the Med..

Re: Sailing from Germany to Croatia

If you are a novice , I would suggest you take up the offer of transport, hone your sailing in the adriatic, going further and further etc, Best not jump in with a long slog in cold weather through some of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet.

With a 38 foot and the expected draft , the canals can be tough going and based on expected water levels you can experience delays or stoppages. Then you still have a fairly big sail to Croatia.

Small steps

With any thing over 1.6 draft you be hard push on the canal , if you don't want to truck it how about getting some one to skipper it down with you .

Re: Sailing from Germany to Croatia

I am just considering my options as this might be a good opportunity to discover this part of the world. On the other hand, being a novice I appreciate the advice of taking small steps
