Northern 35? (A CN 35?)

Hi All:

I've encountered a sailboat described as a "Northern 35" -- a steel monohull yawl, said to have been designed by George Cuthbertson of C&C fame. I could not find any mention of such a boat on the usual suspects such as sailboatdata.com, but general Google sleuthing led me to this page, which alluded to "CN 35 steel yawls imported from Germany" by Cuthbertson's "Canadian Northern" company. So that's likely the bird.

But what I can't find is any reviews or data to help me understand the merits and liabilities of the model. Anyone have any idea?

Cheers,

Buddy_Y

No, I ended up with a different boat. But another site user, RowanB, purchased it and is working on it at the moment. If you have insights to share, he'd be the one to contact. Cheers!

And not many in existence, alas. I love the romance of steel (and wood), but it's beyond a piker like me.

13 were made.

The one mentioned above was scrapped. I nearly bought it back in 2003, but someone bought it at the time sight unseen.

I imagine a lot of them have been scrapped. Hull 13 was made from HSLA (Corten weathering) steel, and may yet be out there, seeing as the rust will be mostly superficial.

Think of these as kinda like a steel version of an alberg and you have the right idea. The mild steel and traditional Atomic 4 have been challenges for maintenance.

Yes, you are right Red Sky/ Jala was scrapped. She I believe was actually hull #2. But the owner gave me all the documentation which is quite interesting. She spent some time on the med. Over the winter I’ll scan it and if anyone is interested….
