Market price for european boats 37-40ft east coast US

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and would like to ask a question about the current market price for european built boats in the range of 37-40ft (eg. Dufour, Beneteau, Bavaria, Elan, Hanse,....).

Unfortunately I didn't find anything in the existing boats and also they are quite rare in the boat classified in this forum.

Details
Year of built: 2015
Enigne hours: 2000hrs
Layout: 3 cabin, two steering wheels
EX Charter!
Extras: bowthruster, heating, no air con

In addition, are there any european brands preferred in the US?

Would be great if you could help me with your judgement.

Thanks
Philipp

PPP,

Welcome to the forum

Can't help with your query, but hopefully someone may be along shortly who can.

Do you have a link to the boat?

Pete

Re: Market price for european boats 37-40ft east coast US

Thanks for your answers and welcome!

Most of the boats I inspected in January have heating (extending the charter season a little bit in spring and autumn here in the north adratic/med) as well as bow thruster (sometimes already in 35ft boats).

Also the average engine hours of the boats I visited is around 500/season.

I don't know a lot of the US market but I am interested how are these european boats in this age (4-5seasons) and size (37-40ft) rated from your experience.

So far I got the feeling that the US market is not so good for this boat size and year of built in general.

Thanks
Philipp

Thumbs up Re: Market price for european boats 37-40ft east coast US

You will find european production boats where the big charter companies are working and where they get decommissioned. Typically in Croatia, Greece, BVI etc.

Boats are usually more or less well maintained but they had a quite hard time. They are equipped with basic things like cheap sails, underdimensioned anchor and short chain, basic electronics and no typical cruising equipment (radar, watermaker etc.). You should include some refit according to your needs (sails, standing rigging, electrics etc.) into your price calculation. Typical age of the boat is between 5 and 10 years. Forget about the rumours about ex-charter boats, but be careful and pick a good surveyor, just to make sure that your snark is not a boojum....

Bow Thrusters are usually equipped, "no air con" comes at no extra cost, heating is depending on where the boats have been chartered. I personally don´t think that a charter company equipps heating in tropical areas. Even in the mediterranean few boats have a heater.

Yachtworld.com is a good place to start, either at the beginning of the season but better at the end of the season when the boats are going out of charter. Why not contacting the charter companies directly?

According to the price range, you will find these boats for around 1/3 to 1/2 of the original price.

@slug: X-yacht ex charter sounds tempting. Where can I find one...

Some random thoughts:

Ex Charter boats have had a lot of wear and tear, and worse.

Build quality of most European boats has been declining, especially in the last 10 years.

If you buy in the US, look at boats in New England, as they are only used a few months a year.

Over the years I've been around all types of boats I've heard that build quality has gone down. Can't see how this is necessarily true. I've also heard that about tugboats and cargo ships and it seems a common refrain from my father in law who started out captaining ships that no one wants to work on anymore. You also need to factor in the work done on older boats to keep them going and to attempt to make them something you might live with.

A couple of our friends just put their boat up for sale after an eleven year cruise from Amsterdam around the Americas and up to British Columbia after doing the Alaska thing. Asked them years ago what they recommend in a boat and they said after owning all types including a well documented and written about wooden boat "get as new as you can afford because no one wants to spend any amount of time on an old boat."

Re: Market price for european boats 37-40ft east coast US

Thank you very much for your answers.

I know about the condition, equipment, prices, etc.. of charter boats here in the northern med.

I am curious about the US market regarding:

- Maybe a weird question but which boat size is most common or easier to sell?

- What are preferred europen brands? Serial production boats only. (I got the feeling that for example Bavaria has quite a bad reputation because there were some keel breakage in the media and also some financial problems with the Bavaria in Europe and USA as well)

- What is the most likely negotiation base in % of the asking price?

Again to the example I posted in the beginning

Details
Year of built: 2015
Enigne hours: 2000hrs
Layout: 3 cabin, two steering wheels
EX Charter!
Extras: bowthruster, heating, no air con

- What is your estimated or experienced market value for a european serial production boat like this? The Yachtworld.com, etc.... prices are quite high I saw in the US.

Regarding quality of the european serial production boats, I think they are quite compareable as they are using same parts (Selden mast, volvo or yanmar engine, B&G nav, sails...). Only at the Dufour I saw some really quality issues with the interiour as this looks really bad after 4 seasons of chartering already (I inspected 4 Dufour's, 2x382 and 2x412).

Thanks in advance
Best Regards
Philipp

And what is the best time the year to sell a boat in the US market in your opinion?

Thanks

Depends on where in the USA one is marketing the boat. The US is huge and very diverse.

Southern states and southern California weather and the Caribbean are most pleasant in the winter. Hurricane season reduces somewhat the demand for and usage of boats in the zone.

Late fall and winter in the Northeast, Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest, cold, snowy, rainy, many / most boats taken out of the water and stored on land.

Re: Market price for european boats 37-40ft east coast US

Thanks for your answer. So it's I guess like everywhere - in the "low season" or winter time....

My estimation for the "market value" (not asked priced) after searching the boat sale pages is around:

125 000$ for 37-38ft
150 000$ for 40-41ft

for the details below. Assuming regular maintained, no obvious damage or excessive wear....

What is your opinion about that?

Thanks
Philipp

There is a 40' Junneau for sale in Everett, WA. Usually a lot of Benetau's in this area, as well.
