Attention all hands:

Those of you who have followed Weyallen's progress as he converted his Insatiable from all out racer to fast cruising yacht will have noted that each and every thing he has done has (at least to the casual observer) slowed down the boat.

None the less, this past weekend he participated in the Cygnet Regatta (one of the more popular events in this neck of the woods, and which brings out most of the local and Hobart area racers). There were two feeder races and then the big event on Sunday.

Results: Feeder one: Insatiable, first!
Feeder two: Insatiable, third
Main event: Insatiable, first again!!!

Patrick is too modest to post this, but I'm not, so congratulations and bloody well done, Mate (and the fair Lisa, helmswoman extraordinare who does all the driving).

Not to take anything away from their efforts-I would imagine their rating must be cushy!

See, Mike? If you're going passive aggressive at least do it in a subtle way like eluding to the fact that Lisa steered the boat right despite Patrick's screw ups on the sheets - LOL...

If you don't mean to "take anything away from their efforts", why the hell did you post it? It's funny, but that sort of comment is what one regularly hears from folks who just lost a race. Losers never want to admit that someone sailed better than they did.

FWIW, Insatiable is from a different club from the organizers of these races and has no influence upon the rater. He competes regularly in his local races and his handicap should be well established after all these years.

Kevmike, I think that comment was mean spirited and thoughtless. Bad form...

No Jim, not at all. Podium finishes are to be celebrated, and I congratulate the crew for their wins and the hard work it took to get there.

Shucks guys. Thanks for the kind words. For strict accuracy, the Regatta was actually won by a million dollar+ Marten 49, and our results were actually a first, a third and a second (with the Marten taking first in the second and third races), but by the vagaries of the local custom, the yacht that wins the Regatta overall doesn't get prizes in the individual races, so we got bumped up a spot in 2 of the 3 races when it came to handing out the pickle dishes.

All performance handicap wins are something of a lottery... We have competed in this particular regatta for, I think, 9 straight years and never done particulary well. To my jaundiced eye, it did tend to appear that the handicapper "looked after" the local boats a bit, at the expense of the "out-of-towners" (not that there is anything really wrong with that). I figure somebody noticed that we had been supporting the regatta faithfully for 9 years and decided we could be honorary locals

Anyway, it was a smashing regatta, as always. We raced the boat pretty well, but not spectacularly. And, just quietly, possibly my favorite time of the regatta was the trip back up to Kettering, through the night, under bright moonlight, with a leg of lamb in the oven and a small glass of shiraz to hand, while the autopilot did all the hard work!

It was also great to catch up and have a beer (or red wine) with Jim and Ann from the other Insatiable (thanks for ferrying us back and forth in the water taxis all weekend, guys!).

In any case well done. Participating is the fun part. Winning is highly overrated. Your cruise back sounds divine.

Pish-tosh. No fighting in my thread please (unless you are fighting about the use of stainless steel for through-hulls and ball valves, or what sort of anchor is best for cruising).

Having done primarily;y handicap racing methinks thou dost protest too much. Handicapping by its nature is only accurate for specific conditions. Boats will do better or worse depending on the change in those conditions.

However, my experience in Ragattas also tells me that there are usually a few boats in the podium class consistently. And that doesn't happen by accident.

It shows a crew that can get the best outta the boat (better than the others) and will sail consistently over multiple races.

Well, I reckon that the real reason that you did well was the committee realizing that you were now a proper cruising boat, not a nasty racer, and altering your rating appropriately.

Well on second thought, it was really because Lisa did a great job driving, and you both did a good job stuffing cloves of garlic into the lamb leg.

We're looking forward to seeing you on the Queensland coast this coming winter.

PS You guys were about the least drunken of all the crews we ferried back and forth! Driving the shore boats was sorta fun, and the Insatiable II fender on the bow of the punt saved a lot of gel coat...

Getting back to the subject (i.e. turning the not-so-ex racer into a cruiser), anyone have any comments on the Rutland 914 wind generator? I know it has a relatively low power output compared to some on the market, but it is probably the quietest I have heard, and keeping the noise down is high on the selection criteria.

For your (collective) information; Lisa and I became live-aboards in July and cast the lines around 6 or 7 weeks ago. We are currently anchored in Corlette Bay, Port Stevens. So the old racer has become a cruiser!
