Jib very hard to roll in, no upper body strength! -- 2 threads merged

In 20 knot winds or so, I find it very hard to furl the jib. I am not weak, but man its tough on me! Almost impossible. I am doing this process in irons...is there a point of sail that helps furl the job? Is there a technique/ procedure that makes it easier?
I am using the winch, and the helmsman is tailing... advice please!!

Try easing off jib halyard a bit.

I find furling far easier when running. Lugging makes it much more difficult

Hello, Lauralee,

Sometimes the bearings get so worn they don't do their job, or they can get jammed from salt crystal buildup. With the sail rolled up, you should be able to turn the foil easily by hand. If you can't, then on a calm day, take the sail out of the furler, and try it again.

If it still doesn't turn, see if you can determine where it is binding. You may have to go aloft to check the top bearing. If necessary, you may have to take the foil off the boat, or hire someone if you are not comfortable with that. We have done it, just be really careful to not kink it.

Ann

Turn downwind and blanket the jib with the main. Rolls in easily with no wind on it!

First, make sure the bearings are not tight. Can you go up front and turn the drum by hand, once the sail is rolled up? If not, either the bearings are gone, there is friction somewhere, or the halyard is too tight.

But most likely, the answer is to furl down wind if the winds are anything above very light. The jib will be blanketed behind the mainsail and it should be managable without the winch. That said, it is smart to haul in with a single turn on the winch, just so that it doesn't run out if the wind changes or gusts.

edit: Lockie beat me by seconds!

Too hard to roll in a furling jib...advice/ hacks please

I am a strong enough female but to roll in my furling jib in winds about 10kn is a bitch!! I currently go head to wind then start pulling in, the helmsperson tailing the line. In 20 kn winds, even with the line around the winch...cant do it. What am I doing wrong? I have a 38 ft boat. 135 percent jib.

First make sure that your halyard is tight. I have had problems furling in a jib if the halyard wraps around the stay. Look up at the top and make sure its not wrapping. You will eventually destroy the halyard the stay or the foil if you crank hard on the winch.

What type of blocks and how are they positioned for the furling line?

Is the jib pulled up to the top of the furler? If you halyard gets wrapped around the stay it will bind and lock the top up. pull to hard with the winch and you will start breaking things.
