High moisture readings on hull with 8 coats of barrier coat

I just had a survey and the readings were high on the hull. The boat was in the water for two years and then pulled up for a survey. The boat has 8 coats of interlux barrier coat applied years ago and it has adhered perfectly. There was not one blister, but I have two year old ablative anti foul still on the hull.

I have read that wet anti foul on barrier coat provides high moisture readings.

Both anti-skid on deck and anti-fouling can give false wet readings. On our 80’s boat, I get much more accurate readings from inside. Removing headliner let me pinpoint wet Deck core That outside reading suggested covered four or five times the area.

Try metering from inside the hull. Or else wait for the paint system to dry throughout.


Please note that if your sailing waters are salty, high moister in the old paint will be induced by any humidity in the air too.


Thus measure from inside the hull.


If it looks perfect with no new blisters, consider it sound.



(Unless the hull is of sandwich design).
