Help me Identify this boat?

Hello! Can anyone help me identify this boat? The seller says it is a 26ft with swing keel that draws 18inches and weighs in at 2450. He is not very good at answering my questions, I think perhaps he is not very tech savy. I would like to know the make before going to knock on the hull. This is my first boat and I would appreciate any other advice that anyone can give me. It needs paint which I intend on doing myself. He says everything else is in fine shape.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If the boat isn't too old, predating the requirement to do this, it will have a hull ID number on the corner of the transom. From that you can identify the name of the builder and the year.

Can you ask the seller to look for this?

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

Thank you! It looks to me to be late 70s, early 80s. If the seller won't at least I can look when I go look at it. Anyone else find kijiji sellers difficult to deal with? Lol. I've messaged a few and they all seem very unwilling to chat about their boat, or even somewhat rude. I have had that experience on kijiji with other items, but didn't expect that so much with sailboat folk who generally seem to be such a congenial group of folks.

My only experiene was looking at a couple of them way back. Turned both down for consideration as one was being sold w/o a trailer and the other one seemed in rough shape. Otherwise for a 1st boat, especially for lake or bay sailing not a bad candidate. Easy to trailer, launch and haul out. With the usual provisos for condition, seaworthiness away from protected waters, etc.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

Thank you all. It looks like I have a choicr between this and a grampian 23 with a new sail and it is ready to sail. It was out on the water yesterday. It has a shoal draft but can be launched on a deeper ramp according to the buyer. Perhaps I will start s new thread about this choice.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

The Mcgregor Venture appears to be a very close relative to the Mcgregor 26. If one checks the Regatta Network website, one will find that a Mcgregor 26 named Evil Intentions won the 100 mile offshore Gulfport to Pensacola race on June 23, 2018.
I would never venture offshore on one, but properly sailed in the right conditions, she can be a beast.

Definitely the Grampian 23. Compare on Sailboat Data. The Grampian displaces 3100 lbs and has a lead keel. Lead is a good indicator of quality. Ventures are not known for quality construction.

Probably tired of the relentless army of tire kickers that call or email. We went through this with several sellers before buying the one that we got through a seller on Kijiji. The sellers usually warm up once they realize you are seriously interested.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

I think it's a clipper 26 as I used to own one a long time ago.

I take that back, it's not a C26. That boat had a more prounouced bow to it.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

It's a McGregor Venture. This was a later iteration of the Venture 21. Good "lake" boat, easy to tow with a Volvo wagon...ha, ha! Retractable keel can be problematic. Not the stiffest boat out there, but depands upon how and where you want to use it. You should be able to get a GREAT deal on it.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

It's fiberglass. It doesn't need paint, it needs to be compounded and waxed. It's a daysailer and I'm sure the owner isn't being 'difficult' he simply doesn't care what is. Honestly, let's say he provides the make and model. What will you do with the information? It won't change the sailing.

Guys on kijiji and Craig's list get bombarded with calls and weird questions and scams all day. Until you show up with money in your hand, I would suspect you are another dead end.

Show up as a show of 'good faith' and he'll more than likely take you much more seriously.

Re: Help me Identify this boat?

These questions are always fun :-)

I like to make that first stab at it and see how I do.

I’m of the McGregor camp as well.
