Seems they hit a unknown object. Luckily they had an epirb and the Coast Guard was on the spot to make the rescue. With the size of the ocean and the smallness of our boats in comparison there must be a lot of junk floating around out there.

Incredible luck about the cutter being only 6 miles away. Whew!

Looks like they might have had to get into that dinghy and wait it out if there was much more of a delay.

The guy lights off the EPIRB, and calls the USCG over the satphone. Both of these worked, but did he issue a mayday call over the VHF, and did the CG cutter hear that from 6 miles away?? I'd probably use any and all means possible to call for help, but remember that the people in VHF range are the most likely to get there first.

One reason I favor metal boats so much these days . They might have a dent in their
metal boat but still floating . And deck leaks are unheard of on a welded metal boat .

I like the metal boats as well.

I also enjoy my watertight crash bulkheads in my fiberglass cat for similar reasons.

There is more than one way to get the job done.

Cheers to the coasties for bringing another group of sailors home safe when the story could have had a very bad ending. thanks! i am so glad they are out ther but hope to never need them.

Amazing thing is they average one rescue per day some place. Some are in even less friendly places than this.

Reminds me of a yacht which my father acquired.
70' steel schooner built in NZ which was attempted to scuttle 30miles off Moreton Island, Queensland - insurance claim. Opened the seacocks, sent a Mayday and climbed into the dingy. How were they to know that there was a naval boat just over there which responded within minutes - arrived in time to close the seacocks! Lost the boat, and the insurance and had criminal charges.
My father was happy though - picked it up for nothing at Customs auction.
