Wanted to buy

Not sure if I posted this in the correct spot.
Where do you suggest I go to find a "good deal" on a sailboat. I am looking for a place in the US that people sail to then decide to sell their boat.
Strange request I know.

Not at all strange. In fact a very good strategy. You may have to go further afield than the US though. IF you are limited to staying withing the 8's I would look for areas where your desired type of boat is less common. Inland for cruisers, deep water ports for day-sailers. The further south you go the better the selection and more likely you are to find a 'deal'. I'm talking deep south here; south of Corpus Christi, TX or south of San Diego, CA

Also availability is going to be dependent on season. Being in San Diego in April, just as everyone is leaving for Mexico, is not going to get you any deals, but a few months later in Corpus Christi, as the storms start to hit the Gulf Coast, may turn up some 'situations'.

Good luck on you search and hope the right boat finds you.

Oddly enough, Hawai'i tends to be a good spot to buy a boat. Probably because, I am told, it's a terrible place to keep a boat.

Look on Yachtworld, and you ought to be able to find out much from the listing prices. Then, when you find a boat you like, ask the broker for a list of recent sales of that model. Yachtworld keeps track of them, and they can give you a list of reported sales. This contains the location information.

I see lots of boats coming out of charter in the BVI. Also, the great lakes might be a place to find a nice boat as the boats are out of the water half the year and thus the hulls ought to be pretty dry, no saltwater, etc.

Lots of boats in Ft. Lauderdale, and I'm sure you can find a bargain there, especially if you're looking for something larger than 30 ft.. Probably the closest place to you with a lot of boats for sale.

jataljard - your "reply" posts are coming through loud and clear.

You might want to try navigating to the list of posts in the "meet and greet section" and then click on New Topic to create a new introduciton post of your own. Welcome aboard by the way!

To Hatteras - I am looking for teh anchorage where people are so bored with their boats that they give them away for free. Still looking...
