I agree entirely, being nice is hard when we are being taken the proverbial out of.

Thanks to everyony who is contributing to this discussion, both the encouraging leads and the 'reality checks' are important and valuable to me.

I'm busy checking all of the yachts suggetsed (Contessa 26m Halcyon 27, Centaur, Vega etc) and am open to more suggestions.

I'll be flying in to the UK on Tuesday. I also appreciate the advice about getting SW soon, and if a yacht is for sale in Spain or Portugal that would also suit.

Meanwhile I have found a couple of yachts in the UK in my price range that are (if the vendor is to be believed) well maintained and ready to sail, but I don't feel I have found 'the one' yet.
- suitable for a singlehanded atlantic crossing
- seaworthy, and ready to go with minor modiications on a total budget of $20,000,

Please let me know if you hear of anything for sale on the grapevine...

RE the fresh water issue, noted, I am planning on 6L a day and allowing plenty of extra days.

At this stage of the year I would not advise any passage from the UK south. Nasty weather. Don't ask me how I know.

His voyage was definately a bit spartan, but it's very interesting reading...

I think your looking in the wrong country if you want to go now. However, if you changed your mind and planned on going in 12 months time then how about looking in Greece.

20k is plenty of money for this. Don't listen to the naysayers. Consider a Dufour Arpege. You should be able to get one in ocean-crossing shape for considerably less than your budget. They are more expensive in Europe, but easier to find there. More room and better sea boat than a Vega or Contessa.

For 20k, if you can do a lot of the upfitting work yourself, consider a bigger boat. Pearson 35's in great shape can be had for that. Certainly Pearson Vanguards. Allied Luder 33's. Bristol 35's. Of course, those are all American boats and won't be easy to find in Europe. The list goes on and on.... Maybe you ought to buy a boat in the U.S. and go the other way.

This is completely feasible, in my opinion.

Look... if you really want to go one can even use a hobie 18 cat.... that can be bought for less then $5000.... with a hand watermaker and supplies... and do the trip from europe across the atlantic with a friend.......

It has been done from the US to Europe as well, but on a larger cat (20 feet) and it took them 18 days....

I would suggest that if you are confident and competent you can do it. Even in a floating shed....

Best of luck (and may you not need any of the luck) regardless of which option you choose...

I don't know jack but I'm hoping Phil gets paid something, and I'm guessing he's owed 10K minimum. He got the boat there.

10k is a ROOMY new boat for a cost conscience sailor.

Do we have any updates on happenings?
