Any knowledge on Aurora 40?

I'm considering a project boat, but there is little to no information online other than sail data and a couple of passing mentions.

Marc Ellis design, I prefer bigger with CB so it is definitely a possibility.
Boat will be used closer to shore until I am comfortable with it, then Newfoundland and South.

Re: Any knowledge on Aurora 40?

Okay well I have learned some more stuff. I managed to reach out to Mark Ellis himself and he called me back and now I know more stuff.
Sail data says 4 made, Ellis corrects at 6 made.
The hull is cored all the way all the way.
The boats were initially made for a yachting club in Toronto I think.
Apparently they were pleasing to the experienced offshore sailors who bought them. Will balance as well and is good at all points of points of sail. Grain of salt of course, because I did get this information from the designer .

Re: Any knowledge on Aurora 40?

Hi Patrick of M,

I "think" Swiftsure Yachts in Seattle just received an Aurora 40 to list. Vessel name is Nutshell if it's the one I'm familiar with.

Re: Any knowledge on Aurora 40?

Just to expound a bit on my last post...

Nutshell is definitely NOT a project boat but if you wanted to see what one looked liked this would be the one. I helped the previous owner sail it to Sidney, BC after he purchased it in Seattle. He then continued up to Sitka, AK where he lived aboard on-and-off for quite a few years.

He loved Mark Ellis' designs and previous to the Nutshell owned a Nonsuch 30, also by Mark Ellis. In fact, he originally got to Sitka by sailing the Nonsuch up from San Francisco. He and I had many good times sailing that boat on San Francisco Bay and to Half Moon Bay, Point Reyes and the Farallon Islands.

Re: Any knowledge on Aurora 40?

Hi, I ended up checking out an Aurora 40 in Ontario. It was pretty rough and missing gear. I found the interior supper cramped and oddly laid out for a 40.
Was that your experience? Perhaps they came with different interior configurations?
Mayb it works better for less tall people (I'm 187 cm).
I passed and moved on to other searches. Turns out another Canadian boat works for me, Corbin 39 CC Pilothouse, bit more open.
Cheers.

Think a much larger Niagara 35 Mk 1 for comparison sake. They are getting pretty long in the tooth now. Condition! Condition! Condition!

Have taken on the restoration of the first Nonsuch, which was launched in 1978. Needs some deck work, hull compounding, and a bit of new gear.

Re: Any knowledge on Aurora 40?

I have an Aurora 40, 1974, not sure of hull #, maybe #3. We thought 11got made, some at Hinterholler and some at the Niagara yard. Lovely boat, great as a long range cruiser. Huge amt of work to restore. Two major refits since I purchased it in '99. Boat name is Borealis. I bought from a guy in Midland, Ont.
