Advice on sailing north from Marathon?

We have a Whitby 42, we need to sail to Reedville VA from Marathon, preferably in February.


Anyone use the Gulf stream going north. We know not to go outside with anything coming from any Norther direction and to follow a cold front?


So many people respond about going south ducking in the ICW? Anyone do it all outside and how much time was involved?


Also is going out far enough to pick up the stream, valid?


Our last boat took 3 weeks in the ditch to go down.
