A School Sail Model Crosses The Atlantic

Recently, a miniature boat built by American junior high school students was retrieved in Norway after 462 days and 13,413 kilometers of drifting through the Atlantic Ocean.
The miniature boat was built in the science classroom of Rye Junior High School in New Hampshire, USA.

The fifth graders built the boat with tools and equipment provided by the nonprofit organization Educational Passages.

On October 9, 2020, the students handed over the boat to the Ocean Education Association for launching.

The boat was equipped with a GPS tracker. The students monitored its track daily. After one year, the GPS signal became unstable, sometimes with long intervals between fixes.

The boat finally arrived in Norway and made landfall at an island called Smøla.
The teacher asked for help on Facebook.
A Norwegian mom left a comment saying, " My son is in 6th grade and this island is right outside our house! We'll go check it out today when he gets home from school. Then let him take it to school."
The small boat-wreck remaining was a deck section and its integrated hold covered in barnacles. Karel's class opened the cargo hold of the boat together. Inside a letter, a group photo, tree leaves, U.S. coins and a mask (!) signed by the whole class.

At least that model does not look large enough to do significant damage in the event of a collision.

This is not always the case with these autonomous vessels.

That track looks like my last trip to Maine.
