Vancouver, Canada: Cruising and Live-Aboard Coach Needed

Hello All;

Please let me know if this is posted in the wrong area.

I have the intention to buy a boat for live aboard in Vancouver. I would like to find, and compensate fairly, someone with significant experience to help me find the right boat, establish live-aboard (at Spruce Harbour?), help me gain maintenance knowledge, and help me build my sailing knowledge.

Background 48 year old single male, currently working as Management Consultant on 5/2 rotations with ASA 106 gained over 2 x 1 week trips in Hawaii and 1 x 1 week trip in Greece. I’m at the stage we here I’m sure I want to do this and would like access to additional knowledge to be comfortable making it happen though I’ll go in “blind” if I have too.

I’m really talking about a longer term 3-5 year coaching relationship here. Ideally the purchase and establishing live aboard will happen this summer, with the maintenance and sailing coaching happening for the longer period. My thought is this might be a win-win if there is a former cruiser resident in the lower mainland who has given up their vessel and wishes to pass on their knowledge and potentially have

Thanks to the two of you who have responded privately. Any West Coast Canada Cruisers care to weigh in?

I’m guessing a live aboard slip in Vancouver has a many year wait list unless you buy the boat in the slip. Even then i’m not sure if you get the slip or not.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, ElSanto.

The Greater Vancouver Floating Home Co-operative [GVFHC] is an equity co-op, which owns and operates Spruce Harbour Marina. The Co-op currently has 55 members.
There are two ways to become a GVFHC member: Buy an existing boat from a current member, or join the waiting list [currently about 7-10 years].
When a member sells their boat and leaves the co-op, their shares are redeemed by the GVFHC. If the boat has been sold to someone wishing to become a member, the GVFHC will interview the prospective member and, on approval, will sell [± $55,000?] the shares to the new member.
If the boat has been sold to someone who does not wish to become a member, the shares will be offered to the person at the top of the waiting list.

This is a list of marinas, that allow marine residents [live-aboard], in British Columbia.

Gord;

Thank you for the insight. Yes, all you state agrees with my understanding of the transaction and yes the object of my desire currently occupies a GVFH and subject to interview and payment I would hope to keep her there. In fact I would do the business with GVFH before purchasing the vessel, assuming that is allowed. If you were not deeply knowledgeable yet eager to purchase, live aboard and be a good skipper to a vessel who might you contact to coach you up on the many subjects that otherwise might end up in embarrassment, legal trouble or worse?

All correct, the only think that I would add .... contact the office manager at Spruce ( GVFH Co-op ), she has a list of members who are interested ( for the right price ) in selling their vessel with shares. Generally speaking you are going to end up paying a bit of a price bump for the vessel with shares
