Green Crew Member Available - Male age 33

Hey There,

About me
I have always been interested in sailing and will be purchasing a boat soon in the Hawaiian islands with my girlfriend and her family. I am currently in Colorado working in IT, and I will have time this summer June / July / Aug to volunteer for free on a boat to get try to get experience! Again, I am not looking for money - will work for free for a week or so to get experience on any sailing vessel 30 foot and larger

I am willing to fly out/drive out to any north american state (including hawaii/alaska) (on my own dime)

I am very motivated to listen to directions and learn all I can about sailing. I am available for small passages if needed.

I have a passport - no criminal history and work references if needed
6'4" and in ok shape and good health - non smoker!

Relevant Experience
I do not get sea sick
I am pretty handy with engines
I am very IT technical literate - Systems Administrator for a large construction company
I am pretty green with sailing, but have been studying up sailing books with terminology this past month, and practicing bowlines and other knots, studying navionics charts, youtube sailing lesson videos, and VR sailing

2001 - around 15 years of age - I was aboard a summer sailing camp where I sailed from Maine to Nova Scotia as part of young adult crew on the 88' Bowdoin arctic schooner.
2012/13 - got STCW 95 training/cert in st thomas - did not do much with this while i lived in caribbean - one day sail
2014 - commercial day sail passenger in maui
2017 - CPR training
2020 chartered a captained sailboat for private daysail tour in ft lauderdale - very basic - some basic instruction/ lessons from the captain

PM if you think i could be a good fit for your sailboat any offers welcome

Hi Caduceus711,

First, welcome to this forum.

Hawaii currently has a mandatory 14 day quarantine period for new arrivals on the island, and there are hints that all travel may be restricted for 'non-essential' personnel. Even inter-island travel is being restricted and closely monitored.

It is difficult to say at this point when 'normal' air travel will resume, and even more difficult to know when cruising / passages will resume. I was planning a trip to Kiribati in July, but it may be months before islands in the north and south Pacific 're-open.'

Anyway...with all that being said, I'll shoot you a PM.

Yep, lousy timing to go sailing. At your height. you're going to need a fairly large boat ( don't plan on being stooped over all the time - you'll soon grow to hate it) I'm curious as to why you would choose Hawaii to purchase your boat. In spite of all the open water there, the facilities for cruisers are quite limited and it's really not a great jumping off spot for anywhere unless you're an experienced sailor who can handle a thousand mile trip. For someone with your lack of experience, I'd think that the Caribbean would be a better learning ground (more facilities and shorter hops) Keep your powder dry until after the hurricane season in hopes the Corona virus will be over by then.

Hawaii = family/home/resources to stay in if needed on oahu, already a boat with a dock there we use. family/friend wants to partake in sailing / funding of said sailboat
Basically there is a lot of support in Hawaii for us right now

I understand completely that Hawaii is remote, passages would require experience, and I dont think we would be doing any large passages until we got a boat with a bit of year+ long experience under our belts.

OP Why not join a local sailing club and gain experience in round the buoys races etc? Be it on keelers or dinghys, it doesn't really matter. But at least you're gaining regular experience in a variety of weather and conditions. Demonstrates a bit of gumption.
Sorry to say, but to me your advert just screams passenger.
Only a very small number of crew are paid; it's usually the other way round as often there's a daily rate for food charged.
It's pretty normal for crew to pay their own airfares.
And everyone gets sea sick; the issue is more about whether you can still stand your watch even though you feel awful.
Skippers want to know if you can do your share of the cooking and cleaning, and stand watches in the most miserable of weather: whether you know how to turn a spanner and read a multi metre. Oh and how good you are at unblocking the solids in a toilet.
Also joining the boat with your own set of decent wet weather gear.

Sorry I don't want to diminish your enthusiasm, but if you really want to sail oceans you have to get away from Youtube and actually get out on the water.

Not many people taking in strangers and not many boats moving. Few countries are allowing entry, and once in, you're quarantined. Move and you're quarantined.

I would expect any anchorage protected in all directions to be getting crowded very quickly as people look for safe places to hunker down for weeks or months.

I get that, that is why I made this thread to get some info and test the waters for future travel. I too am stuck inside quarantined. My OP has a future timeline laid out in the post. mid - late summer.

That is the plan, thanks. Did you have a green crew member position in the North America area as the OP asked?
