Capetown to Cyprus early Jan 19

Purchasing a boat on the Western Cape soon and getting ready for a passage to Cyprus. Has anyone here done this trip? I probably will need one more crew. Three of us to date.
Anyone any thoughts on this route for me. Thanks in advance, Philip

Re: Capetown to Cyprus early Jan 19

done it both ways, via suez and via cape verdes, leaving from CT in april, and leaving tanzania in april with the onset of the SW monsoon.

both routes will require weeks of motor sailing to windward from the bottom end of the red sea,or from the equator if going via cape verdes, madeira.
so plenty of spare filters, oil for oil changes, fan belts, impellors etc as you will not find them easily enroute.

Via atlantic easy sail to the equator from ct then(SE 15-25kt), hard going ( 15-25kt NE-ENE) untill madeira, then easy sail to cyprus with prevailing NW winds.

if going the other way, fairly good conditions till the bottom end of mozambique channel, then generally no wind till the comores, light head winds till tanzania, then good SW winds till s sudan if you are lucky, then 15-25 head winds till cyprus.
nov- april is cyclone season in the mozambique channel so care is needed.

Thanks atoll, that's very useful and certainly puts the brakes on our departure time.
And JohnT thanks for the private message. Will contact you later.

johnT has done the atlantic many times ,and yachts leave any time after december, but ideally you want to arrive in june in gibraltar to avoid the worst of winter/spring weather in the north atlantic

Have not done sail to Cyprus but from CT to Annapolis Md. and agree with Atoll; it's an easy sail North from CT to Equator. And, I second the notion of taking a 4th person; makes for a more restful and happy crew.
