This looks like a great place for yachting.

Re: Kerguelen Islands

I wouldn't think so.
I am extremely doubtful that webcam is actually in the Kerguelen Islands.
The climate is cold oceanic with rain or snow falling more than 300 days a year. There are no natural ports or airstrips. The Marion Dufresne is the supply vessel operated by Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF)*. It visits Kerguelen Islands 4 times per year, in April, August, November and December. The helicopter on board allows unloading equipment and disembarking passengers. The movement within the archipelago is ordinarily walk, sometimes with the support of a barge in the Golfe du Morbihan.
In 2006, all the islands of the archipelago were listed as natural reserve. Access to some sites of Kerguelen Islands is consequently subject to permits.

Most definitely not the Kerguelen Islands I'm more familiar with, and I'm pretty sure a Café would be a bust of a business down there...

Gord you haven't convinced me!

I tried the webcam just now but the islands are in darkness.

When I read "Over the Edge of the World"*, the fantastic story of Magellan's circumnavigation, I was surprised to learn that the raggedy remnants of his expedition, in their barely floatable boat, passed by the Kerguelen's on their way home.

Sorry, I think I'm wrong. It was Ile Amsterdam.

Re: Kerguelen Islands

I believe it's this Kerguelen: https://goo.gl/maps/TSDWmQ1mXRufiE5g8

The Sellor group runs all the marinas in Lorient (Brittany, France): https://www.ports-paysdelorient.fr/en

If you look at the foot of the linked webcam page:
La SELLOR, société d’économie mixte créée en 1988, a pour objet la gestion de ports de plaisance, d’équipements nautiques, de musées et d’hébergements situés sur le territoire de la Communauté d’Agglomération du Pays de Lorient.
Google Translate:
SELLOR, a semi-public company created in 1988, aims to manage marinas, nautical facilities, museums and accommodation located on the territory of the Pays de Lorient Agglomeration Community.
It is indeed a lovely area for yachting, though. I spent 2 weeks anchored at the Île De Groix this summer, and 3 weeks at Lorient marina. Île De Groix to the Cedeira anchorage in Spain in 96 hours.

This is the webcam in the link you posted, as you say in darkness.

Webcam.... http://89.248.77.10:8080/mjpg/video....=1500648133417

The below link is what it looks like in a previous daylight recording.

Here's a screen shot from the webcam footage on the FB link above.

Google maps birds eye view

Webcam more than likely on the building top left.

Zoom out and we are in the Lorient area of France specifically the Nautical Centre of Kerguelen which is supposed to be one of the top sailing schools in France, and where in your original post/link it says the webcam is located, not the Islands in the Southern Ocean

The Nautical Centre https://www.sellor-nautisme.fr/

Re: Kerguelen Islands

I'm busy trying to put a flat pack together so really can't respond. Not sure what you are getting at.

What about the satellite view of the Kerguelen islands?

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ke...3!4d69.5816287

Why the enormous amount of boats in the webcam? Can't imagine they are down at the Kerguelen Archipelago!!

Will get back when I get the flat pack sorted out

WHat I was getting at was ... if you click "contact" on the webcam page, it gives you a map and an address ... put that address into google for a better map ... voila, the village of Kerguelen in Brittany, France.

Beautiful ... but 8000 miles away from the webcam.

They aren't. They're in France.

The Kerguelen Islands were named after the Captain of the ship that discovered them: Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec who was named after the estates his family owned in France, where today a sailing school is located ... with a webcam and lots of boats.

TL,DR.
The webcam is in France!
