Safe mooring in Auckland
Good morning all,
I arrived in Opua two weeks ago and after some time in the Bay of Island I am now heading south. New Zealand is beautiful !!
I have to fly back to Chile for Xmas and I look for a cheap/ safe mooring where to live the boat.
I was thinking about Whangarei or Auckland ...
any suggestion welcome.
thanks all
Roberto

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
Cheap and safe is Tamale River. I suggest the Pannier Yacht and Boating Club. Www.Pybc.org.nz

Tamaki River. Damn auto correct. No Tamales nearby unless you include Zambrero Mexican chain near Sylvia Park

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
Our old house at 15 English Bay Road, Opua. Miss it :-(
Why not leave it in Opua? Safe, good community, short ride to airport. Half Moon Bay best option near Auckland.
Some moorings over by Birkenhead as well. I wouldn't trust the area though.
Sigh, just reminiscing since you brought up our other life :-) Enjoy every minute!

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
An alternative is Coromandel harbour, which is a totally enclosed natural harbour on the Eastern side of the Hauraki Gulf.
It is 3 - 4 hours drive from Auckland which is a long way for most pakehas so it should be relatively cheap.
I will caveat that it's 20 years since I was there so I can't give any usefull info about mooring availabilty or cost.

Whangarei would be the cheapest official moorings. And well sheltered up the river. Contact Whangarei marina. Opua, off the marina. Contact Opua marina.
Sometimes private moorings to rent in the Nook, or the other bays. The Nook is well sheltered, the other harbour bays, not so much.
Kerikeri river.
Warkworth/Mahurangi.
Auckland. up by Herald island, Panmure, (tidal) Tamaki river. (Can be a bit rough in the wider part). Look for private mooring owners renting their moorings out. Trademe or tradaboat, or yacht clubs..
Coromandel harbour has limited moorings. Access to power and jetty is tidal.

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
Thank you all,
I am now in Whangarei and looks like there is no "piles" place and the marina berth option is a little expensive...
I will made some phone calls to the other places you suggested.
I was planning to spend Christmas in NZ but plane change at the last minute so I have to fly soon!
thanks again !

Another tip.... DO NOT let LATAM put you in Row 12 on their dream
nightmareliner.... it's the bulkhead/bassinet row.
About 17 or 18 is good.... the breakfast trolley has run out of decent tucker by the time it gets to 20 and all you get is Jamon y Queso in dry white bread... the Chilean national dish.
How long you keeping your boat in NZ?

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
not sure how long I will be away.
I will say one month to be safe.
Just spoke with somebody at Panmure Yacht Club ... lets see if I can found something over there.
I tried Opua Marina and the Harbour master of Coromandel but here is already Saturday afternoon!
Thank you Ping! your knowledge goes from boat to plane ...

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
Hi,
No where in Auckland is cheap but you could try Westpark Marina inside the Waitemata Harbour. Cheapest will probably be Whangarei . You cannot see New Zealand in a month . It takes a lifetime .. good Luck Glenn

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
I'm currently on a mooring in Auckland and moving to a Marina in Jan.
I'm guessing you've flown the coop already, but if you're still looking, give me a bell (pm)

Re: Safe mooring in Auckland
I just would like to update this post.
I left my boat on a pile mooring in the Tamaki river not far of the Panmure Yacht Club for one and half month.
I found the place good and cheap (1/2 price than Wangarey).
The pile mooring are rented directly by Auckland Harbour master, a really helpful lady!
Thanks all for your suggestions!
