Marinas And Boat Yards In Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

This summer I plan to head from Newport, RI to NYC, up the Hudson to the Erie/Oswego canals, go through the Great Lakes and end up in Milwaukee. From there I want to ship my Freedom 40/40 via truck to the Sea of Cortez and relaunch her in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico.

Does anyone have any information regarding boat yards and marinas in the area?

Surprised no responses here yet. I can at least tell you that yes there is a marina in Puerto Penasco - aka Rocky Point. I've not been there since 2007 but then there was a large industrial complex for the fishing fleet. You should have no trouble finding a launching point and most likely a slip.

Thought I'd at least give you some hope while waiting for the most recent info.

Any issue with customs shipping that boat into Mexico? Another option would be to ship the boat to San Diego and head south from there...

Good luck with the voyage!

Geoff,
I'll echo what the others on the World Cruising website suggested. San Carlos, just north of Guaymas offers a good spot to put in. It's one of the places many cruisers use to ship their boats back to the U.S., overland, via flat-bed semi-trailer. The folks at Marina Seca there have been involved in trucking boats north for many years. You might want to consider that as a place to begin your cruise of the Sea of Cortez. Whatever you decide, you'll have a memorable time in one of the best cruising grounds in the world. Great sailing...Pete

Re: Marinas And Boat Yards In Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

We were in Puerto Penasco a couple of years ago. There is a marina or 2, so I'm pretty sure you would be OK. Just not a lot of anything other than condos. The tidal ranges are MUCH more than most of the US -so bear this in mind. This could be why marinas aren't popular?
