since you arrive in Newcastle, you should definitely check out Lake Macquarie. It is a huge cruising area in its own right, the largest estuary in the world or something.
You can get a berth your size at the LMYC for around $450 a month. Won't beat that anywhere else!
We are currently cruising up the Coast. Before setting off from Pittwater, a friend who has circumnavigated gave us this advice: The sooner you get away from the Australian East Coast, the better.
That also means the further North the better.
I migrated from Europe to Australia and did my due diligence.
I noticed for example that Melbourne is about the same distance from the equator as Madrid.
Problem is there is the whole of Europe between Madrid and the North Pole.
There is only Water between Melbourne and the South Pole and when it is blowing a Southerly, every ten days or so, you know about it.

Congratulations! It is so good to hear a happy reason for a change.

If you're tempted by Moreton Bay, find out about the depths, first. We draw 7'2", and have dragged the keel through the mud getting into Scarborough, back when it was an entry port. Those entries are shallow, for us.

I think having the boat as close to where you live as possible will allow you both the greatest use of it. If you go easy on the paraphernalia for the baby, you'll be able to sail with him or her all along.

Check out the Gippsland Lakes. Plenty of "affordable" moorings, lovely sailing, great facilities. Easy drive from Mel for the weekend. More fun than PFB

That adds to the fun of it, especially in summer when it is 35+ at 12:00 and then the SW change comes and it gets windy and drops to 20 in half an hour. Can be quite amusing in the city watching the office girls in their light summer dresses deal with the change

We did many Sunday races of St Kilda beating into the nasty chop from a SW. I vaguely recall that the club (Columbia YC) would race unless the winds were greater than 30knts at the start

The shipping company (sevenstars) only does scheduled routes. I did get a quote from a company that could do Melbourne (via Singapore) but the mast had to be dropped and it was substantially more expensive, maybe even double.

Given that 12 months ago I was planning to cross the Atlantic, possibly solo, in November 2016, I think sailing the East Coast will be the little adventure I need before reality bites.

I recently delivered a 47' beneteau from Tas to Melbourne for its new owner. Hew was paying about $10k for a berth in Sandringham, versus about $5k for a berth in Kettering Tasmania. $5000 buys an awful lot of return flights from Melb to Hobart. The cruising in the d'Entrecasteaux Channel, Fredrik Henry Bay, Norfolk Bay, Mercury Passage etc. is second to none....

I also live in AlbertPark. Its a easy cycle to RMYS, membership about a $1000 if you own a boat $600 for basic membership, and plenty of berths available. I also sail out of SYC. BYC pissed off a lot of there keel boaters, by (planned?) poor decisions, those members went to SYC. Racing on the bay is great all year, but not that exciting for cruising. My fellow crew members could assist you in delivery. So could I, but I intend taking my boat down to Hobart from Cairns about then. I know 2 delivery skippers.
Anyway at RMYS not all race, there are a couple of livaboards, the Marina is new, no issues. Give me a hoy, I"ll introduce you to a nice bunch of guys who race a 40' Adams at RMYS.
