" in the med where, to my knowledge, there are no serious man-eating predators."
I recall a pic in an austrian paper way back in the 70ies when an austrian tourist was bitten by a shark swimming off a beach in the Aegean. the pic showed the bitemarks (for whatever reason the shark wasn't really serious) & the jawradius was enormous, certainly the beast was >4m.

You guys need to read Knox Johnsons book about his solo Golden Globe circumnavigation.. he used to dive off the bow and swim like crazy till the stern caught up then he grab ahold, climb back on board then do it again..
This while sailing through the Southern Ocean.. and I for one am not gonna call him a liar..

Re: YouTube sailing.

q true about RKJ, I remember reading that years ago ( not just him, they all seemed to be at it ) and thinking it was a bit dangerous, , but, no one has commented on another aspect in that recent video,, the guy was pointing out how there were ships everywhere and also possible serious risk from numerous small refugee boats leaving the African coast,, yet, when it is the girls turn to be on night watch she is sitting inside vblogging and reading her book !! no one on deck watch !,, I doubt if any of the refugee boats use AIS or are even big enough to show up on radar..but they made it safely to shore.

Indeed, a National Geographic program showed Great Whites in the Med and up the French Atlantic coast too. No sightings of GW in the UK recently, perhaps they find a greater availability of food sources in the Med, most of them being lightly based in an oil vinaigrette.

Shark do not eat humans, they bite by mistake thinking its a seal. Somehow, I think from the texture of our meat, they are able to tell that they did not bite onto a seal and would let go.

Re: YouTube sailing.

When being towed by the boat naked, does a penis look like any sort of prey that might attract sharp fanged predators? What would be my concern after having fish bite my toes in Mallorca.

Re: YouTube sailing.

OT anecdote:
skinny dipping with the lady in an alpine lake:
I. "...always uneasy in belly-stroke what with the jewels hanging down..."
the lady, tone heavily ironic: "..afraid to drag it along on the bottom ha?"

Re: YouTube sailing.

Robin Knox Johnson used to trail a line and then try to keep pace with Suhaili to keep fit. A few Arc participants recorded swimming from the boat on quiet days. it's pretty common. In the spirit of confession we had dolphins in the med a few years back and we trailed a line for a crew member that wanted to swim with them. We were doing 8 knots. He quickly dropped back and grabbed the line. It ripped his swim shorts clean off much to the enjoyment of the rest of the crew as we brought him back on board.

This is true for Great White sharks. Mostly. A very hungry Great White will settle for just about anything (anyone?).

All bets are off when you look at species like Tigers and Bull sharks. Their menu is much broader.
