So, where are you right now?

We are in San Carlos at this time. If you float this way we will buy you a beer (or two) and talk... boats?

La Cruz. We will probably head straight out from here, kids want to get back. We may do a week or two in the sea, but we won't make it that far up.

Talking boats and beer, what a combo.

On the one hand it would be nice to have the boat in the PNW so we could care for it during the selling process. It would also be easier to prep for sale after we have moved ashore. Selling in San Diego or San Francisco would mean we wouldn't have to beat up the coast for a month or two, and we would get home faster, and back to work making money sooner. San Diego in particular seems like more of a year round market, weather wise. Thoughts? Thanks.
Hi ! Nice coastal or offshore sailboat... What's you bottom selling price ? Do you have a list of what's included in that price ? Cheers!

Our bottom price will vary day by day I don't have a listing together, but when we do I'll post the ad here.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Oregon doesn't have sales tax, has a cheap bi-annual license, and less expensive marina cost... but a smaller population of buyers.

I live in Portland and traveled from Bellingham, WA to Northern California while looking... I would think there is some advantage to having the boat near your land home.

Re: Where to sell our boat on the west coast USA?

in cali one has a 30 day window for exiting state to avoid the 8.75 percent tax (approx--sales tax dependent on area sales tax rates) levied on sales of boats.
you may also be hit for property taxes. ventura will get you on this even if not inventura,i learned...oopsy again.
after 30 days you need to pay the sales tax. you can sell in ensenada and avoid that, but you need a t i p maintained.
san diego has many boats for sale and no one buying em
oopsy.

For what it's worth, I know a broker in Seattle who specializes in Wauquiez and it maybe the guy you are referring to: Michael Locatell at NW Yacht Net 206-459-0880 cell, or e-mail mlocatell@aol.com

My understanding is use tax is a property tax,(1.5% or so, depending on county ) technically on where boat is Midnight, Jan 1 of each year, yet that does not stop the tax man from aggressively pursuing the "rich boat owners".

Sales tax is also dependent on city/county and is considerably more: (The statewide tax rate is 7.25%. In most areas of California, local jurisdictions have added district taxes that increase the tax owed by a seller. Those district tax rates range from 0.10% to 1.00%.)

Re: Where to sell our boat on the west coast USA?

EzzyD, nope sorry, use tax is not property tax. I am only knowledgeable about the California use tax because I came very close to buying a boat in San Diego last month. So the broker and I went through the use tax and buying off shore in great detail. Use tax is due when the boat is sold, unless one buys it offshore and exits California immediately.

Thanks, we know Mike. We bought the boat from him two years ago. He is very knowledgeable, especially on Wauquiez yachts, and all around good guy. His wife Beth is wonderful.

Highly unlikely, as the sailing season is particularly short in the PNW, while it is particularly long in SoCal. I would think San Diego would be an especially advantageous selling location, with very easy access to Ensenada, B.C., for tax free transfer.

Re: Where to sell our boat on the west coast USA?

Price is most likely a product of supply and demand... Easy enough to lookup local prices. There is probably more to consider than price, like: average number of days to sell, cost of the marina while waiting for a buyer, proximity to your home if you want to sail before you sell, ease of locating a surveyor, access to lift out, parts, and services.
