Is this her?

In which case there's a bit of information at https://nautipedia.it/index.php/NORDCANTIERI_KOALA_38 if you can manage a little Italian. Built 40-50 years ago as an IOR one-tonner.

Starting here you can follow the history from Nordcantieri to Manta, then it tapers off to nothing (in a quick search).

Cav32 the Koala 38 sounds as rare as a drop bear. How about a picture so we can see what one looks like?

Re: What is a Koala 38

Actually, F&A, the Koala 38 is a small firearm carried by drop bears who have suffered injury such that their claws and teeth are no longer sufficient to dispatch foreign tourists who wander through their patches. These arms are usually carried in their natural "holster", a significant advantage of the marsupial life forms. It is not clear if this constitutes "concealed carry" or not, and regulatory dispute interferes with their usage in the wild. The few urban drop bears that survive are opting for Taser weapons because of difficulty in obtaining ammo for the 38s in the big cities and the lack of loud bangs which causes unrest in the tourist busses which in turn reduces prey numbers.

Why they have chosen to name a yacht after this obscure weapon is beyond me.

Re: What is a Koala 38

LOL Jim, well played. I would love to know how an Italian design ended up with an Aussie name? If I have my French right the yacht designer was 90 in 2020. So possibly he met some Aussie diggers in WW2 when he was a kid.
Cheers

Jim - the other issue you glossed (intentionally?!) over is the lack of thumbs on the gloss bears, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to (quickly) release the safety. Sure, it can be done, but the armed bears are a dead giveaway with their chipped teeth.

Ahhh, but you forget that the Koala 38 is a custom designed firearm, one where the safety is engaged/disengaged by pressing a button with their cute little button noses. You might wonder how they have financed the custom work? Well, they get royalties from each and every little koala doll that is made in the far East, so they are quite well endowed fiscally. And of course their expenses for food are greatly reduced in tourist season here in Oz...

I completely forgot, so appreciate the reminder. Thankfully, you can smell the eucalyptus a mile away, which facilitates an easy getaway, which is why one never reads about anyone falling victim. Koala on koala violence is way up, although you’d never know it reading the news.

A little bit of context for non-Australians (like me): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear

Guys,

Please, have some respect for our cutest mammalian export. The recent fires have decimated our populations. Too damn close to Endangered as far as we are concerned.

And on top of that Deaths attributed to Drop Bears are down 42% last year.

This could be one of the great thread hijacks of all time and thank you Jamme, for bringing some reality back into the topic. Now any potential visitor to Australia can rely on an unverified entry in wickipedia that implies that drop bears may be the figment of the collective Oz imagination.
But how do we warn these same visitors of the far the more silent, devious, lethal but fortunately less commonly encountered Hoop Snake.

The Australian Museum has an entry on drop bears [1], in its catalogue of fauna, classifying them as Thylarctos Plummetus.
‘Australian Geographic’ ran an article [2], in 2013, claiming that researchers had discovered that drop bears were more likely to attack tourists, than locals, with Australian accents. It seems drop bears target people with strange accents. To reduce risk of attack, speak with a strong Orstralyian accent, using lots of Aussie slang words.

The existence of the hoop snake [also reported in the Americas], however has never been accepted, by the scientific community. If you do see one, you might get rich! Evidently, naturalist Raymond Ditmars has placed $10,000 in a trust fund, at a bank in New York, for the first person to provide evidence, that the hoop snake actually exists.

Now, could someone tell us about the Oomedoodle Bird?
Oh, and where can one purchase kangaroo feathers?

Re: What is a Koala 38

The Oomiedoodle Bird is endemic to most of the world. It is medium sized bird with a short beak and an almost human like call. Unfortunately it has no legs and its unique call ("Oomiedoodle, Oomiedoodle") can be heard each time it lands.

There is a marine species also, but still lacking legs. It's unique call is more gentle; "Ohyes, Ohyes".
