Wave height is one measure, frequency should be added to the measure. 8 feet is nothing. Try going through the cape cod canal with a 30 knot breeze blowing against the current. You will learn that wave height is only a small piece of coping.
Then 8 feet becomes something as yo fall off the swell and drop.

Re: Transit time? NY-FL

I'd love to see the link to the boat that hit 35' breaking seas without damage.

That particular canal can be a dangerous place in the best of weather. It's made worse when you have a boat the size of the Eagle screaming up your backside, looking for channel room.

At least, that's my recollection from 20 years ago. I don't get up that way much anymore.

You better leave today and get as far south as you can. A low pressure is supposed to develop and come up the coast. Right now it is predicted for Wednesday / Thursday and somewhat off shore.

Do you need to be...that depends on your schedule.
Should you be...that depends on your location, crew & equipment.

Re: Transit time? NY-FL

We leave today, we are planning 35 miles a day until we meet up with our Canadian friends. should be a nice little ride. The forecast is a bit.... mild.
when we hit the ocean we may have less the 5 knot winds.... at least it will be smooth.
