That scenario is nothing like what is happening in that photo. That is not a life raft and he is not stepping up. He is leaving behind years of hard work and a dream for something much more important to him...his family. That anyone could make light of or criticize someone else in that position is beyond comprehension.

I've kept the tiller extension to my first Hobie Cat and the tiller from my first keelboat (though never had anything sink, yet). Like others have noted, there is just something 'special' to many of us about our vessels, large or small.
Don't have any idea if this could be a naval tradition like "plankholding" (as my uncle was aboard his WWII destroyer, until KIA). I just did it at the time, seemed appropriate.

As far as Eric and family, don't think the Navy minded.
And I'm more supportive of them than not, but a little skeptical of taking an infant and toddler offshore regardless.
My better half then would have had me committed had I suggested such a life path, but there are many who do this and it seems to be OK for most of them. Go for it if you really want to.

Think about the wheel on a boat. So many hours lightly touching the wheel or strongly holding it in heavier weather, in night and day. Looking at the stars and the compass from that perspective. The communication that you have with the boat as you adjust course. For those of us who get pleasure from hand-steering (even with windvanes and autopilots) the wheel is a special connection. I can completely understand taking the wheel from my boat if I were losing it.

Many people keep trinkets or objects to what means the most. Symbolic I would say. To keep the dream alive or as a piece to talk about.

I have keys to most cars I owned still. I pick up that key ring and my head is filled with the miles I put on them. Kinda like a souvenir shot glass or spoons some round up in their trips.

As I am still sifting through the ashes of what was home I am struggling to decide on what is even worth saving, but there was a handful of items I'm shocked that made it. I don't want to forget it but it's painfull as well. I almost lost my pops. I think about last month and it still hits me hard.
