Sometimes, Ya Just Gotta Laugh
Sometimes you hear a story, so far fetched, you Just GOTTA LAUGH..
Being we're in a Marine Based Business, we get loads of stories from people..
But a few days ago I had a New Sailor come into the shop, looking to have some canvas work done.. (wont say his name).. But in the conversation he merntioned he had bought a used Catalina 22 as his first sailboat and his boat had the "Safety Rudder" on it.. I'm thinking its probably the swing up rudder that many had, But in his conversation It came up a couple more times.. So I asked.. What "Safety Rudder" are you speaking of..
So he went on to tell me that the rudder on his boat was specially designed by Catalina with a designed length to come out of the water allowing the boat to "Round-Up" befor the boat would turn over..
And that rounding-up was a safety feture built into the Catalina 22..
I just left it at that......
AND SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTA LAUGH............

Re: Sometimes, You Just Gota Laugh
Gee, I wonder if I have a "Safety Mast" on my boat that allows for dismasting before capsize?

Re: Sometimes, You Just Gota Laugh
My Venture 21 had one o' them before I went with an IdaSailor one. Sure made a difference having that extra 30% of rudder depth...

Re: Sometimes, You Just Gota Laugh
So if I understand the guys story, he likes to sail on his rail and pays little attention to his sail form. Too much testosterone.

I have one of those safety features...but mine is transferable from boat to boat.
That be my Mrs. ...one disapproving glance and the boat automaticly reduces heel
to acceptable degree.

Probably in the lead of advocacy for sailing helmets, because it reminds him of being in primary school.

Re: Sometimes, You Just Gota Laugh
Thought maybe the "safety rudder" was gonna be the swing keel on the C22. Good story!

This is why women prefer Cats. W/o a woman you would have to raise the lee rudder as a safety.

Re: Sometimes, You Just Gota Laugh
Oddly enough, when my Admiral (Maggie) first took the helm, she didn’t feel that she was “performance” sailing, unless the rails were in the water.
She liked to sail hard on the wind, and it took a couple of years to train her to sail a compass course (which she now does/did to perfection).

+1, Mine has one too! Mine also come with an "audible alarm" that really gets your attention.

Upon reflection, that's a good problem to have.

Re: Sometimes, Ya Just Gotta Laugh
I would'a got the name of the broker that "SOLD" him his boat. Apparently he used to be an eskimo refridgerator salesman.
