Re: Snakes on a boat

Best way to get a big snake out of the boat is a machete , then you won't chop a hole in the boat like a 410 would and they are legal.
Dinner time, taste just like chicken !

Re: Snakes on a boat

Yes, it is the biggest snake anyone has seen on the island. Rebak is small and a snake that big would have trouble keeping itself feed. Plenty of Cobras here though, but they keep away. No one has heard of a snake that big coming onboard to hunt

Re: Snakes on a boat

In a marina in a Tropical area, its hot now, actually there is a problem with Cobras going into homes, looking for water, but I digress. Nice sea breeze through the boat at night. Most boats that are lived on are open with a light cover on entry. This is rare event.

Re: Snakes on a boat

First, sorry about your cat. The fact that the snake was only doing what it is in its nature to do is not much consolation, I am sure.

As for the snake, shooting it with your shotgun below decks is probably a bad idea for the reasons mentioned, though it would be emotionally satisfying, I am sure. A machete or cleaver would be the thing to use, I think. Chop head off. Skin. Cut up. Cook. Eat. I am very much a gun person but often other tools are better suited for the task at hand. No sense blowing a hole in your boat or a tank or whatever, just to counter a python. And no sense bringing down the wrath of gun-hating authorities by announcing its presence and that of an owner willing to use it, by discharging it for little cause where it will be heard by many.

Constrictor type snakes can and often do defend themselves against large predators (such as humans) by biting. They don't have fangs but they have a lot of very pointy little teeth. A blanket or sail or whatever tossed over it first would make good sense, before finding and getting your hands on the bitey end and cutting it off. The snake will flop around quite a bit which could be traumatic for wife or kids to watch. Still it would be a faster resolution, maybe, than shooing it off the boat.

It is just as natural for we animals of the Human species to eat other animals, as it is for animals of Snake species to eat other animals. You could consider it vengeance, payback, or just getting a couple meals worth of free meat, self-delivered to your boat. Whatevah.

Re: Snakes on a boat

I knew a fellow in Maryland who had a black snake crawl out of his boom and bite him.

Re: Snakes on a boat

My friend in Alaska brought a shopping bag full of king crabs onto a plane.
Unfortunately they got out and started down the aisle!

Re: Snakes on a boat

My good friend Johno was anchored in Langkawi for many years and had a couple of similar experiences. He found that anchoring in estuaries or rain outflows increased the chances as the snakes come with branches etc washed downstream. The boat seems a safer harbor for them and yes - the anchor chain is an easy ladder for them.

RIP Johno by the way
