Sailing Movies Recommendations

forgot he was in wind. I did like that movie though, especially the scene where the "IRS" buzzes the field in an avanti...
but no, the one im thinking of was made for tv in the 70's. he buys a classic old sailboat as part of a mid life crisis, ends up falling off and watching it sail away without him. its been a while but I remember it being good...

Well our film hopefully will make this list when it comes out. Not a Hollywood budget, but we did our best to show real, accurate sailing. It's called One Simple Question and it's about our journey to find an iceberg. It should be available spring 2015.

It's a cool film, especially bearing in mind it's age.

I would add Wind and The Dove to the list if they aren't already there.

Also Longitude - mostly of an historical significance since it's about the 50 year quest to build the first Chronometer but more than half of the movie is sailing on Tall Ships. Besides, how can you not recommend a movie that stars Jeremy Irons?

Yep, the Dove. The books were awesome but the movie no so but we have to watch it right. You get to see Deborah Raffin at least.

Looks like they gave ole Joe Bottoms a Ranger 23 to circumnavigate with instead some 24' Lapworth design. Looks like he's too young to shave so we won't be getting any offshore/BlueWater shaving scenes.

I second the nomination of "Longitude". This is a great mini-series, with moving performances.

Another great one is the "Horatio Hornblower" series by A&E (http://www.amazon.com/Horatio-Hornbl.../dp/B0018C705M). The sailing sequences sometimes show the limited budget (when compared to Master and Commander), but the stories are great and the acting very good.

"Riddle of the Sands" is a good sailing movie, Starring a young Michael York and Jenny Agutter.

The several film and TV productions of Shackleton's "Endurance" expedition are well worth watching.

No one has mentioned Morning Light, which is a documentary about a group of young sailors training for and competing in the Transpac. Pretty well done.

Hands down, the greatest sailing movie of all time is, What About Bob.

I would have to vote for Dove, not because it was a great movie, but because of the effect that it had on me when I saw it. I was only a few months back from the South Pacific in a boat almost the same size as the Dove, and in the early scenes of the movie it showed him working out an evening round of sights by kerosene lamp. That was so realistic that it sent chills down my spine. Much of the movie was a cute little love affair, but the showing of him tossing an anchor and a pile of rope and chain over the bow made me realize that nobody was doing any fact checking. A good movie for people thinking of traveling on a very small boat. Just my 2 cents worth. ______Grant.

It was also nice seeing the girls sound asleep after battling the heavy weather for a few days. The guy narrating had it right also during the weather event. There is nothing you can do but deal with it.

(and) how they would consult their book for things like Heavy Weather and waterspouts when the actually encountered them.

It also helps to be young and with friends I think.
