Re: Sailboat names

It better be a good boat, and not some dinky trailer sailor for that name.

Re: Sailboat names

I decided to name my 35' Vindo "ONNACALL" and my dinghy "THE OTHER LINE" so when someone called my shop looking for me, my office manager could tell them that I was on "THE OTHER LINE then going out "ONNACALL".

I remember a South African race boat that was named " Dabulamanzi"...it's a Zulu word for " cleaver of the waters"....cool name, but try spelling that to the Coast Guard....

You gotta pick a name that is easily said, easily understood, and easy to spell...a single name is best....forget about the "Betsy Sue" stuff...and other multi word names....
Funnt that. I have seen many more boats for sale with a wife's or girl friends name on the transom.
Must be something to it ....

One should think carefully in naming a boat. I started with a full page of possible names and over time eliminated those that did not pass the "test of time". When I bought the boat it already had one of the names on it and I didn't change it, DESTINY.

My previous boat was call N.O.L.H.I. (No Other Love Have I). It was the theme music from the 1950s series Victory At Sea called Beneath the Southern Cross, by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Perry Como made a hit with lyrics No Other Love Have I to the music. The acronym made it short and easy to spell phonetically and I was often ask what the letters meant.

The most ridiculous name I have ever seen was posted in a magazine a number of years ago...17-18-37-44-53-18 (not the real numbers). The owner had apparently won the lottery and used the winning numbers...can you see him calling the Coast Guard in an emergency with it? But it was a big motor yacht...what can you expect.

The Boat I now own is "Luna - Sea" haha, very appropriate, I didn't come up with it was pervious owner.

Re: Sailboat names

I wondered the same thing about naming my little boat Tetra. Tetras being very small fish that live underwater. But I like the double meaning. On the one hand its a very small fish and on the other its the name of the pirate from Zelda: Wind Waker.

I like that not everyone will get the reference.
