private flags?

ok, does anyone do this anymore, i ran across an article a while back in the wooden boat mag. did a bit of searching of designs and thought it would be fun to do. so i guess the questions is, does anyone on here have one, that they designed themselves?

i did one for a few reasons, other than just being something i wanted to do for fun, it would be a good way for my friends to spot my boat, and for me to find it at anchorage. (i always loose my car at the mall)

any thoughts?

We have one based on our adopted mascot "Beastie". See my avatar. Lori spent a good portion of the winter before last hand stitching the flag.

I think the "Don't Tread on Me" would be a cool flag to use

thats great!
where do you fly it? i have been trying to figure out how to put a flag pole on the mast head with the vhf on top of that... and to keep it from fouling the wind insturments, etc...

To fly your flag, or a small Christmas tree as is often done, you use a pigstick.
See:Pig stick - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's just sort of a simple pole, with an eye near the middle to hoist it and an eye at one end for a down pull, that raises the other end high,

They are easy to make. I think the book, " The Sailor's Sketchbook by Bruce Bingham shows how.

Or you could purchase one at:
Hathaway, Reiser & Raymond*::*Flags & Flagstaffs*::*Pig Sticks*::*Hathaways Custom Non-Fouling Pigstick

I have no connection to the Hathaway store.

They can be fun to use.

greg,
so let me get this straight, you have a pole, flag attached to one end, line to mast head attached to the mid point of the pole, line to deck attached to the other end of the pole. pull the pole to the top of the mast, tie it off, pull the other line down to hold the pole up right, and tie it off? or attach the pole to your main halyard and hoist it up with the sail?

what i was thinking was extend the vhf antenna on an alu. pole about 4' above the mast head. then install a flag halyard on the pole just under the vhf, that way the flag should be out of the way of the insturments, and the vhf be a little higher.

since i have the mast off at present i was just curious if that would work?

Neckyzips,

On my previous boat I flew a club burgee from the mast top, I just like the looks of it. I bought a 3m plastic flag pole which came in three sections in a camping shop, dead cheap. As I don't like lines running up the outside of the mast (as they will tend to clatter/rattle and annoy me and the rest of the harbour enspecially at night) I fixed one of the sections to the mast, worked just fine. The drawback of this arrangement of course is when you want to replace or change the burgee, but as they say "there is nothing wrong with looking at your own boat from the top of your mast!"

Not yet - but on the list is what I will term a "Battle Flag" - Gonna fly from the masthead on a Pig Stick - will be about 10 foot long x 2 foot wide....a combo of these:-

The design will take a bit of thought.........

The purpose? Huh???....I reckon if everything in life needed a purpose would be a kinda dull life

Might also do one for the Mizzen
