Re: NEED A TOW ASAP

And/or because they can sail, and not worry about confined waterways.

But there is still some question as to a repair that can only be performed in open water, unless that was addressed in her longish post today in the part about her husband wanting to work at a dock in a less confined space. That might be what she meant by "open water".

I still think there is a language issue at play.

I was referring to sailing up the outside averaging 100nm/day.. on a bad day..
Inside an optimistic 50miles/day

Carebear,

Situation is worse for seller then imagined. You were faced with an extortion for an extra $1000 after making a commitment, be it emotional - time - money, into boat.

Only defense seller has is you don't seem to be telling seller about problems. How can seller offer use of dock till March unless you ask?

Document problems, expenses, and send letter to both broker and seller. certified mail. Phone email telling them they will get letter.

Make specific reasonable request for use of dock as previously agreed and now extended time. I would offer to split the expenses of tow and other dock fee 50/50.

Be sure to inform if they do not agree to this reasonable request you are prepared to escalate matters and offer to split expenses is null.

Go be a grizzly!

I can understand their intimidation with bridges if the engine and reverse gear was dodgy on their first movements.

If I were in their situation (both employed and a dock already waiting at home)..... my priority would be to test the mechanicals and practice boat handling in preparation to motor up the ICW .

Open water and Sailing trials later once you have inspected, lubricated and tested everything at you home dock.

Now that you have given us a few more details, there will be other responses (probably a lot of them), and some may offer you additional advice. I offer only this: don't spend ANY more money on "gear" unless it is absolutely needed to get you home. Literally, not a dime. Take the first year, use the boat as much as possible, THEN decide what the boat really needs or doesn't need, based on the way you use it.

I almost cried when I read that you had spent $3000 on radar.
Carebear

Run don't walk... take that $3000 radar back even if they want big restocking charge.

For $1500 you can buy a fantastic radar.

There is a good case you wont need one for long time.

Gotta agree. You're struggling to pay for dockage but can afford a $3,000 radar that most sailors never need. If you lived in Maine that purchase might be understandable but even then it would be way down the list of things you need.

Re: NEED A TOW ASAP

Another vote for stick it to the seller and broker.

See if you can file a complaint with whatever the state brokers associations might be in Florida. I did a quick google search and found these folks:
https://www.fyba.org/

The last minute changing the deal thing is really shady. Rattle your sword at them all and maybe you can get some kind of concession from somebody.

Sometimes it's easier to just let things go in your wake, but you should at least give them a broadside before you sail off over the horizon.

And don't worry, this is boating. It seems you can't have the priceless happy days without the "I want to light the boat on fire" days as well.

We are going through the crap storm right now ourselves... it gets better! a lot better!

carebear,

Yet again, what engine does your boat have?

We'd all really like to help.

All the more reason to get a composting head.

Just as an aside using an outboard bulb means the fuel pump has to work harder to get the fuel than if it was simply a fuel line. While I understand the upside of it there is also a down side.

Don't see why.. all that's in there is a non return valve to get past and its a much shorter gravity draw than from a fuel tank..

I tried to find useful info in the OP's replies and came up way short. Ur light hearted summation, while maybe not terribly useful, was likely accurate.

Suggestions of threats of litigation are ludicrous. As has been noted, a raw water pump problem is a likely culprit on a boat that has sat idle for half a decade.

I too have allowed rum to negate the effects of my filter. I just hang my head and take the lashes.
